In 2021, students in Grade 5 will also have an advisor. An advisor is one of five teachers; Ms Kesler, Ms Farr, Ms Caruana Mrs Collins or Ms Fletcher. These teachers will be your students first point of contact and will meet weekly. It is the job of the advisor to have a clear understanding of the student's inquiry. Students will also regularly meet with their Homeroom teacher to discuss their inquiries.
Support and encourage students and teachers throughout the process of inquiry
Help your child to access resources- people, places, media, and information
Provide expert subject knowledge when possible
Encourage independent inquiry and acknowledge student ownership of the process
Encourage your child to complete their work, but don’t do the work for them
Ask probing questions, but don’t tell them the direction they should take
Celebrate with the students by attending the staging of the Exhibition
In 2021, all students will have one Mentor outside their homeroom classes. A Mentor is a member of the Junior School staff who can offer a unique perspective for the student and has been selected specifically for individual students. Mentors may be selected based on a speciality area or a profound PYP knowledge. Mentors will meet with their student weekly.
It is the role of the Mentor to;
Be supportive and encouraging and attend regular meetings
Offer advice on locating resources and using them efficiently
Ask guiding questions
Help interpret sophisticated/difficult information
Facilitate interviews, telephone calls, and any electronic communication
Guide student in documenting all mentor meetings
Check in on the student’s exhibition journey, as documented on their planners/journal, and provide feedback
Celebrate achievements and successes with the student
