Here are few photos that we had trouble uploading from the Mock Presentations on Friday!
Hello everyone,
What an end to the week. While it was a challenge to start a Friday with presentations, we all managed to present our Mock PYPX Exhibitions on Zoom. Thank you very much to the Grade 3 & 4 students who watched our mock presentations this week and gave us feedback!
There is a lot to do before next Wednesday, so I am sure everyone will be working over the weekend. I asked a few students walking past what is something they were proud of from this morning:
They said;
"We got a lot of feedback and it helped."
"We taught people about our issue."
"A lot of people watched us."
"We got to work as a group."
"Proud of my pronunciation"
Things they needed to work on;
"We have to make my presentation more interesting ....maybe by adding some videos."
"I think we need more practice with speaking."
"I need to speak louder and clearer."
When I asked about next weeks presentation, they said:
Excited. Nervous. Confident. Afraid. Stressed. Knowledgeable.
Invitations out are out!
Check your inbox, invitations designed by our very own Seoin Kang in 5TF- they have now been sent out!
Hello!
Live update in the classroom. We thought we would share a snap shot of the daily life in Grade 5. This was taken on Monday during an independent PYPX working session.
Hello,
Just a quick update -This Friday, students will be having what we call a "mock" Exhibition. It is where they can present their progress so far to a real audience over Zoom. Students will then reflect on these presentations and change things before presenting next week. The students were all told last week, so I am sure many of you will know about this!
Hello everyone,
The Grade 5 rooms are transforming into Art studios with students building, painting, sketching and creating! There are so many different ways that students are using art to express their issues- it is going to be great to see the final products.
By now, you will have heard that for safety reasons, the 2021 PYP Exhibition will only be online. Students have already started working with their groups to design how they can make the most interactive Zoom presentation. On Thursday, many students watched the Grade 4 Energy Fair to get ideas and to think about what worked best in their presentations. Well done Grade 4- you were all very great communicators and thank you for letting us sit in on your presentations.
We are meeting with our Teams every 2nd day, making sure that each member has a clear role in their team.
Thank you for another good week Grade 5! The countdown (15 days!) is on!
~ G5 team
Hello everyone,
Another week of progress! This week both classes spent time in Music with Ms Lee planning their Opening Performance. The students have been given a lot of agency in this performance, to allow them to express themselves as a year level. Ms Fletcher will be accompanying them to music sessions to help with filming- so there should be progress photos of the performance on this page!
Back in the classroom, the girls have been working hard to plan and sketch out their ideas for their Art piece. We have a VERY creative group of students so we are looking forward to the many sculptures, animations, comics, painting and models that the students have planned.
Each week, the teams meet for at least 135 minutes to work on their issues together. As we get closer to Exhibition, it is likely this time will increase. There are a handful of students in Grade 5 presenting their issues on their own , but it has been lovely to see that in this time they often check in with each other and just to share their progress.
In 5TF, the final Maths draft is due this week and the draft for Writing is due. In 5SC, the final Writing draft is due and the Maths draft is due this week.
Hello everyone,
This week, Grade 5 has spent A LOT of time working on their writing. There is quite a collection too - we have persuasive writing, short stories, comics, scripts and newspaper articles ! We also worked on our Math component- with many surveys, graphs and charts being sent out and analyzed. We met with our groups to discuss which actions we plan to do (some groups took Action over the Spring Break!) and how we want to present our information to our audience- should it be in a group or individual?
On Thursday, we sat together and spoke about how Action doesn't always need to be in the form of a donation. There are many different ways to take action and we have created a handy infographic that you can see in the Action section of this Webpage to help us.
As we get closer to Exhibition, it has been great to stop and take a moment to reflect on our new knowledge ! This week, it has been really obvious that the Grade 5 students are getting more and more excited (and nervous) about what they are creating, writing and planning for their presentations.
Hello everyone,
The week before Spring Break has found Grade 5 very busy- amongst all of our research, meetings and workshops, we have had the Terry Fox Run.
One important part of the PYPX is the writing component. Students do not need to write an essay but they need to express their issue in written from: some students may be writing a comic, others creating a news report or a poem. And of course some will be writing a persuasive writing essay. This week Ms Kesler, Ms Joh, Ms Farr, Ms Caruana and Ms Fletcher all ran workshops reminding students about different features of different writing genres. Have a look at our Resources section to see the Workshop slides.
We had some time working with our Teams this week- with many students sharing resources and their finalized Central Ideas and Lines of Inquiry. This week, we have been impressed by how well the students are organizing their work - just ask about their planners, checklists, sites, Noodletools and Docs!
Have a happy and safe holidays! We hope the girls keep researching but also take a break.
Hello everyone,
BHA Grade 5 PYPX 2021 has 15 different teams!
On Monday students from across both classes, formed teams. We now have some students working in groups of 4 and others working on their own. The teachers loved to see that some teams have students in them who never worked together before - as this showed how the girls really thought about their issues and used it to guide who they will collaborate with. Well done!
Exhibition has both individual and team components so we will continue to work both independently on our own issue AND collaborate with others in our team.
Research has also continued this week, with "Noodletools" becoming part of the daily vocabulary for many students in Grade 5. Noodletools is an online research platform that allows students to organize their sources and create Notecards to keep a record of what they learn from them. We have been using Noodletools all year and Exhibition will turn us into EXPERTS which is great because Noodletools is also used in the Middle School! You can find out more about Noodletools on our Website under the 'Resources' tab.
Each week, each student adds to and perfects their individual Website. This week we have used our Makerspace time and the expertise of Ms Gasparini to support the personalizing of our sites. Your daughter's website is an ongoing process and it wont be completed until Exhibition, however, we work on it almost daily in Grade 5. Our websites help us keep a record of our individual learning journeys. Please ask your daughter to have a look at their website! They are very cool.
Ms Kesler led a session with Grade 5 this week to help us find key words related to our issue in order to create our own Central Ideas and Lines of Inquiry. We used the Hexagonal Thinking routine to visualize and format this learning.
The Central Idea and Lines of Inquiry are very important in PYP units, as they help us structure our inquiries and define what our inquiries will be about.
In the PYPX, Central Ideas and Lines of Inquiry are being written by the students- they can be tricky to write and can take lots of drafting- we hope that by early next week, every student in Grade 5 has finished writing their Central Ideas and Lines of Inquiry. These will be published under your child's photo on this website, on the G5 2021 tab.
Hello everyone,
This week, students have chosen their issues!
And what a selection we have - everything from Kpop idols and their fan bases, to racism against Asians, electronic device addiction, mental health, discrimination in sports, endangered animals and ethical fashion choices!
Using the Mindmaps from last week, we transformed our passions to topics and finally to issues we want to learn about. The UNSDGS helped us to make further global connections and to challenge our perspectives.
After deciding on an issue, we started to ask questions. The more questions we asked, the more connections we can make to the Key Concepts. The Key Concepts support our higher-order thinking and provide lenses for considering different points of view.
Most of the students have also met with their Advisors this week. They had to juggle appointment times and other classes.
Students have also been appointed their Mentors and have been writing emails to schedule appointments for next week. Make sure you check in with your child to see who is part of their Learning team for PYPX.
5TF was also lucky this week to have students from Grade 3 come and give a Water Scarcity presentation. It was amazing to see the skills these students had when presenting and the amount of knowledge they had to share. It was definitely inspiring!
In Makerspace we also reviewed many of the technologies we have used this year in Grade 5- this will help us decide which (if any) technology we would like to use for PYPX.
Hello everyone,
Students across both classes have seen their planners this week and they are working on identifying what their passions are. Ms Kesler held a workshop on Thursday, where the students looked at different images and analyzed the different environmental issues from around the wold. In groups, students created a 'See, Think, Wonder' chart. We continue to experiment and work with different people and have not chosen our final Exhibition groups yet.
Hello everyone,
Students from Grade 6 and Grade 7 came to visit the Grade 5 students today. They reflected on their PYPX Exhibition experiences and shared highlights. The girls also spent time answering questions from the Grade 5 students, talking about the challenges they overcome and offering advice.
Taking place at the start of the PYPX experience, the LAUNCH day is a day where students will work in groups of 5 to overcome a series of challenges. These challenges will develop their abilities to collaborate with others, be independent and communicate in a variety of ways. The challenges center around the 'How We Express Ourselves' Transdisciplinary theme with challenges in Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Coding and Sport. Have a look at the Running WOman website, or watch the video below for more information.
