Communities are groups that exist in proximity defined by space, time or relationship. Communities include, for example, groups of people sharing particular characteristics, beliefs or values as well as groups of interdependent organisms living together in a specific habitat.
For this unit, it is important to understand that a solution to a problem for one community may create problems for another. These problems could be on a small or even personal scale, while others may be far-reaching, affecting communities thousands of miles away or the global community.
When establishing the need and developing the design brief, we should consider the community, whether this is a community that affects the design (target audience) or one that is affected by it.
When developing ideas, it is important to engage with the target audience to ensure the design is fit-for-purpose. We must engage with the communities that effect and are affected by the solution when evaluating how well our designs solve the problem.
What strategies can designers use to work with communities?
How do designers evaluate the impact of their designs on a community?
How do designers decide what problems to address?
How do we define "responsible" design?
To what extent should designers be responsible for any unintended negative impacts of their designs?
Do designers have a responsibility to design for the good of a community?
You can choose from four areas for your inquiry. Each area has 2 design problems to choose from. Select one design problem to inquire into.
