What are the benefits of the course?
This qualification aims to develop your knowledge, understanding and skills of the essentials of Sport and Physical Activity. You will gain an insight into the Sport and Physical Activity industry. Designed in collaboration with industry experts this qualification focuses on the requirements that today’s employers demand. You will also develop professional, personal and social skills through interaction with peers, stakeholders and clients, as well as theoretical knowledge and understanding to underpin these skills. These support the transferable skills required by employers such as communication, problem solving, time management, research and analytical skills.
What will I study?
The qualification is structured into mandatory units (ones that you must do) and optional units.
The mandatory units are:
Body Systems and the effects of physical activity (Exam)
Sports coaching and activity leadership (Coursework)
Sports organisation and development (Exam)
Some of the optional units we may run are:
Performance analysis in sport and exercise (Coursework)
Organisation of sports events (Coursework)
Biomechanics and movement analysis (Coursework)
Sports injuries and rehabilitation (Coursework)
Practical skills in sport and physical activities (Coursework)
Sport and exercise psychology (Coursework)
Sport and exercise sociology (Coursework)
How will I be assessed?
Your tutor will teach content and set assignments throughout your course for you to complete. These may take a number of different forms; presentations, booklets, practical performances and video evidence are just a few of the ways in which you may be asked to present your work. You will also be taught content for the exams and be expected to revise this away from lesson as well as complete exam questions independently.
What does it lead to?
This qualification can lead to progression to Higher Education; each year students progress to universities to study a wide range of sports-related programmes, e.g. Personal Training, Sports Conditioning, Sports Science, Sports Management, Sports Studies, Sport and Exercise Science, Leisure Management, Teacher Training, Sports Development, Coaching, Sports Injuries and Rehabilitation, Sports Technology Design etc.
The qualification can also lead to employment in sports-related industries; such as administrators for Sports Council and fitness clubs, physical training instructors, sports development officers. Previous students' career progression has included Private Health and Fitness Club management, Sports Council Administration, Assistant Managers in Sports Centres, Sports Development Officers, Physical Training Instructors in HM Forces, Leisure Assistants in swimming pools, leisure centres or sports centres.
Entry Requirements:
A Merit at BTEC Level 2 Sport, a grade 5 at GCSE PE or a grade 5 at GCSE English if PE/Sport has not been studied previously.
