The BRACU Optics and Photonics OPTICA Student Chapter was established in 2019 under the supervision of Dr. Abu S.M. Mohsin. In a significant milestone, the chapter received approval from Optica, USA, on March 15, 2021, becoming the first OSA-approved chapter in Bangladesh. This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the importance of optics and photonics research and innovation in the region. Optica, previously known as the Optical Society of America (OSA), was founded in 1916 to advance knowledge and applications within optics and photonics.
The mission of the BRACU Optics and Photonics OPTICA Student Chapter is to promote the generation, application, and dissemination of knowledge in the fields of optics and photonics. We aim to foster professional development and networking opportunities among students, researchers, and professionals in these fields while advancing our community's innovation and collaboration in optics and photonics research.
Our vision is to inspire future generations and strengthen the optics and photonics community in Bangladesh, fostering a culture of scientific inquiry and practical application to tackle contemporary societal challenges. Through our activities, we strive to empower our members with the skills and knowledge necessary for successful careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
The BRACU Optics and Photonics OPTICA Student Chapter engages in a variety of activities to fulfill our mission:
UV-C Based Mask Disinfection Chamber: Development of efficient technologies to combat the spread of pathogens.
UV-C Based Surface Disinfection Robot: Creating automated solutions for surface sanitation in various settings.
UV-C Based Water Purification System: Innovative approaches to ensure access to clean and safe drinking water.
Research on nanomaterials, biosensor, thin film/perovskite solar cell (plasmonic solar cell) etc.
Organizing events focused on mentorship, professional development, and higher study workshops.
Hosting research ethics and publication-related workshops to prepare members for academic and professional pursuits.
Conducting interactive STEM workshops and presentations to engage and educate younger students.
Arranging competitions to stimulate interest in science and technology among high school and university students.
Organizing seminars and workshops to enhance knowledge in optics and photonics, featuring expert speakers and hands-on experiences.
Regular club meetings and yearly Annual General Meetings (AGMs) to ensure active participation and collaboration among members.
Utilizing online platforms for webinars and discussions to reach a wider audience and maintain engagement within the community, especially during times of restricted movement.
Through these activities, the BRACU Optics and Photonics OPTICA Student Chapter is committed to fostering a vibrant community that supports research, professional growth, and innovative solutions in the field of optics and photonics. By aligning with the core mission of Optica, we aim to contribute to the global advancement of optical science and technology while addressing the pressing needs of our society.
