(Strong details are bolded.)
Of Mice and Men is one of the most banned books in the U.S., due in part to George’s harsh treatment of Lennie, who suffers from a mental disability. What details in the novel do opponents of the novel probably cite as evidence?
Weak Response (6/10)
Lennie, who has a mental disability, is treated poorly by George throughout the novel Of Mice and Men. Early in the book, he is always yelling at him and playing tricks on him. He flips out on him for no reason and disrespects him. It’s like he doesn’t even care about him and doesn’t want him around, even though they’re supposed to be friends. Even though George protects Lennie at the ranch, he totally sells him out in the end by killing him. George’s treatment of Lennie is terrible throughout the novel.
Strong Response (10/10)
Those who oppose teaching Of Mice and Men make the case that Lennie, who has a mental disability, is treated poorly by George. For example, in the first chapter, George flips out on Lennie for asking for ketchup with his beans, and then goes on a tirade of insults, even telling him that his life would be wonderful without Lennie. He later tells Slim about how he used to play tricks on him, like telling Lennie to jump in a river, which nearly caused him to drown. Finally, though George sticks up for Lennie on the ranch, as soon as his so-called friend causes a threat to his own safety, he decides to execute him to exonerate himself, rather than to defend Lennie from Curley’s wrath.
