INDUCTS 8 STUDENTS TO QUILL & SCROLL

MEMBERSHIP ON MAY 19, 2021

Bethel Park High School inducted 8 students into its Chapter of Quill & Scroll, the International Honorary Society for High School Journalists on Thursday, May 28, 2021 at 6:30 p.m.

Students inducted into Quill & Scroll membership were Joseph Burgy, Austin Faber, Meghan Krapp, Madelyn Hoffmann, Marissa Wycinski, Matthew McGrath, Lander Muszynski, and Malik Yasin.

“It’s always a gratifying experience for students who have worked diligently on school publications media to be recognized for their work,” noted Dr. Charles Youngs, coordinator of the school’s Quill & Scroll Chapter.

As part of the ceremony, journalism advisers Mr. Brad Ksaszowski and Mr. John Allemang, joined Dr. Youngs in offering their congratulatory remarks to student staff

members of the high school's newspaper (Hawk Eye), yearbook (Beacon), video production studio (BHTV), and literary arts magazine (Vernissage), who have excelled

in communications work during the past school year.

The BPHS Chapter of Quill & Scroll was established in 1947. The local group builds upon the history of the international society, which was founded on April 10, 1926. It was then that a group of high school advisers organized the honorary for the purpose of encouraging and rewarding individual achievements in journalism and allied fields.

Since its organization, Quill & Scroll has granted charters in more than 13,350 high school across the nation and around the world.

Dr. Youngs, BPHS Curriculum Facilitator of English Language Arts, hosted the live web event. School publications advisers shared highlights of their year. The BPHS school journalism and communications advisers are Mr. John Allemang, adviser of the Hawk Eye online student newspaper and the Beacon yearbook; and Mr. Brad Kszastowski, adviser of video production and Black Hawk TV .

A keynote address was given by Mrs. Vicki Flotta, an award-winning public relations director. Flotta who had a career in publications and media relations, including the past 17 years as director of public relations for the Bethel Park School District. She retired from that job in June 2020. The students, many of them seniors grew up in the district during her tenure, remembering her coverage of events and ever-popular snow delay-day messages. In her remarks, Flotta encouraged the students to continue work hard to communicate effectively and highlighted the importance of being forthright in communications and creating relationships among community and media entities.

Following Flotta’s remarks, the induction, Youngs led the participatory ceremonial candle lighting, while students recited descriptions of the eight principles of effective journalism took place. The initiates received membership pins and certificates following the event and a subscription to the Quill & Scroll online magazine.

According to Quill & Scroll's by-laws, members must be chosen from students enrolled in high school, Grades 10-12, who, at the time of their election, meet the following requirements: They must be a senior, junior or second semester sophomore, be in the upper third of their class in general scholastic standing, have done superior work in some phase of school publications, and be recommended by their publication adviser.
