ADMINISTERING MEDICINES
6RS for Medicine check – before administering:
1. Right PUPIL
2. Right MEDICINE
3. Right DOSE - check and spread dose through day!
4. Right TIME
5. Right ROUTE
6. Right to REFUSE
· Legally ANY ADULT CAN ADMINISTER
· DUTY to report side effects / errors (eg: Forgetting) – IF HAPPENS ON TRIP – report to parents.
· Record any ‘refusals’
· If 2 doses paracetamol given too close together – don’t panic but do record
· If exceeding daily dose = follow up with visit to doc!
· Confidentiality! Be discrete.
PROCEDURE FOR ADMINISTERING:
· Check NAME
· Check IN DATE
· Check DOSAGE – written.
· Check TIME to be administered.
· Controlled drugs – administer in pairs – 2 signatures, keep in locked box, locked room, list and check number tablets remaining.
· NO CRUSHING / NO OPENING CAPSULES
RECORD KEEPING – FORM TYPES
1) PUPIL’S REGULAR meds– fill in orange form only (easiest) – DR SILVESTER TO HOLD
· CONTROLLED DRUGS –
2) STOCK meds - Dr SILVESTER TO HOLD and administer at pupil request.
3) OWN meds – each group leader to hold and complete.
COMPLETE FORMS IN FULL DETAIL:
· PUPIL’S FULL NAME
· FULL MEDICINE NAME
· AN ENTRY per child
· Dosage given / Time
· Sign off
CARRIED ON THE TRIP :
· 1 X big bag of stock meds – Dr S to carry in hold (board bag)
· 2 X blue medical bags - 1 for each coach
· Dr S will carry a stock of meds on the slopes for most able ski groups- she will administer
· Mrs Almeid-Field will carry a stock of meds for base of slopes (beginners) – she will administer
ON RETURN TO SCHOOL: Return all Medical forms to M THOMPSON, who will pass on to S BEECH. Pupil’s own meds – give straight back to parents and they dispose of
WORTH NOTING - OTHER ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
· NO parental consent – NO administering, even of creams
· Medicines are CHEMICALS – be safe, not sorry!
· Be accountable! For all!
· DO ASK – Dr S holds a supply of stock medication – paracetamol, ibuprofen, cetirizine, antiseptic cream, E45 and throat lozenges
· Generic / brand names – check ingredients
· Liquid meds – use appropriate dosage spoons & SHAKE meds
· Refrigeration of meds – IN BOX and IN HOTEL FRIDGE (labelled)
· Eye drops – if 2 kinds – 2 minutes between each medication into the eye
· Creams – put on down limb / leave half hour if 2 different creams
· If something is not consented to on our Medical info Form, and we are concerned on trip – can call home to get permission – GET WRITTEN CONSENT via email!
· IBRUFEN good for period pains
· USE ONE SLEEVE at a time
