This was a challenging year, you should all be proud of yourselves for continuing the learning despite all of the obstacles!
It was so great to see so many of you on Friday!

Dear Boston Public Schools Families,
On behalf of the entire team at the Boston Public Schools (BPS), thank you for your continued partnership. We know this spring closure hasn’t been easy for you or our students. Please know that we love and miss them, their teachers miss them, and we all are looking forward to seeing them back at school.
Below you will find updates on report cards, summer learning, enrichment activities, and services, plus a note about the planning for the reopening of schools in September. We are creating ways for you to give us your feedback and ask questions about the new school year and will share those updates in the coming weeks.
Report Cards:
Report cards are being prepared and will be sent soon. A quick reminder that they will look different this year given the new grading system as part of Remote Learning. Students in Kindergarten through fifth grade will receive grades of “Met,” “Approaching,” or “Not Yet Met,” based on their progress since school buildings closed. Please contact your child’s school with any questions, particularly if your child did not get marks of “Met,” and ensure your spot for summer learning.
Summer Learning and Enrichment:
Summer learning and enrichment programming will be provided from July 6 - August 7 (a few programs will run later into August). All learning and enrichment programming will be provided remotely.
If your child’s school is hosting Summer Learning, they will reach out to you directly with information on timelines and registration. Please contact your school if you have any questions.
We also provide BPS 5th Quarter summer programs. These are run by BPS-approved partners. All eligible students are invited to attend, but any family can apply to these programs. Please note that space is limited. You can find more information about these learning opportunities by visiting bostonpublicschools.org/summer. You can register here.
Summer Camps, Jobs, Internships, and Volunteer Opportunities
Summer camps and programs are available to all families for enrollment. Some camps and programs may be quite different this summer because of the nationwide pandemic. You can find more information by visiting bostonpublicschools.org/summercamps.
Summer youth employment opportunities are also available for students, including jobs with the Private Industry Council, the Department of Youth Employment and Engagement, plus many others. You can find more information by visiting bostonpublicschools.org/summer.
Meals: BPS will continue to provide access to free breakfast and lunch meals to the City of Boston children through pick-up and delivery, for students who regularly receive door-to-door transportation. The BPS meal sites currently open will continue serving Boston children throughout the summer. Meal sites will remain open on weekdays from June 23-July 2. Beginning July 6, BPS will operate an additional 18 meal sites. All sites will be open Monday-Friday, 8:30-11:30 a.m. In addition, the City of Boston and community partners will operate dozens of additional meal sites, open throughout the summer. You can learn more by visiting bostonpublicschools.org/freemeals.
Social-Emotional Support: BPS will continue to offer opportunities for students to receive mental health services and other counseling via telehealth. You can learn more and read other tips for staying healthy by visiting bostonpublicschools.org/selsupport.
Technology: Students who are enrolled in summer learning can continue to use the Chromebooks they were assigned, as well as the hotspot they may have been provided in order to continue their learning. Students leaving the district must return their Chromebook to their school by contacting their teacher or principal. Graduating seniors must return their Chromebook at the time they pick up their diploma. Read more at bostonpublicschools.org/techhelp.
September: We know there are a lot of questions about what school will look like in the Fall. We are preparing for a number of learning options that include in-person, online, and a blend of the two. We continue to monitor all guidance from local, state, and federal public health officials and are launching a public engagement process to gather your questions and hear your feedback. We are meeting with students, families, educators, nurses, public health officials, and other organizations to inform our decisions and will continue to provide updates on this process as it continues throughout the summer.
Thank you for your continued support and engagement. We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with you and your family in your child’s continued learning. We wish you all a happy and healthy summer.
All my best,
Dr. Brenda Cassellius
Superintendent
