~We are very available to talk via email, and if absolutely necessary, by phone as well. Mrs. A.Z. is partial to texting if you do want to reach out by phone, but Mr. Demerjian does not text, and would prefer a phone call if necessary. Please do not hesitate to reach out at any time if you need clarification, support, or have any questions going forward. We will respond within 24 hours of your email unless there is some sort of emergency! Also, please remember to email all teachers, not just one! This ensures that all are on the same page, and in case one teacher is busy, the other can respond!~

ELA Expectations
Topics Covered:
Over the next few weeks, we will be doing a good amount of reading from guided reading books and responding to text in writing. Sometimes this will be annotations and sometimes this will be literature responses. We will practice revising our writing based on teacher feedback and we will also continue to meet for video chat guided reading sessions on Google Hangouts.
We will also be restarting our City Upon a Hill unit with colonial era Boston and how the city grew. The work for this portion of the unit will be based on reading complex text, making gist statements, and plotting ideas on a timeline. Eventually, kids will be asked to go to Sora and listen to our class read aloud, I Survived the Molasses Flood 1919 for whole group Hangouts discussions.
As we engage in guided reading and our Boston unit, we will be making the Genre Challenge an ongoing priority. Kids will be asked to write summaries for each book and to apply a skill from our in class work as well (for example, story structure or characterization)
When and How Much:
All children should be reading for 25 minutes per day.
All children should be submitting 4 words from their reading each Friday, plus definitions for those words as proof of having read.
All children will meet for guided reading once per week. There will be one- two (around the mid way point of the book and the end of the book) literature responses per book. They will be revised with teacher feedback.
All children will work on the Genre Challenge and submit three book summaries along with one other activity for the books (noted above), one per week starting in the second week of the month.
The City Upon a Hill unit will have assignments posted on a weekly basis. Kids will submit work via Google Docs. They will create a timeline and add to it each week.
