Speech II

Course Description and Goals: These survey courses will introduce students to various forms of communication. The primary focus, however, will be public speaking. The classroom activities are designed to help students learn to express themselves clearly, logically, and confidently

Speech I

The student will have the opportunity to develop strategies and knowledge to gain self-confidence by demonstrating the following behaviors:

  • speaking longer in front of an audience
  • speaking more confidently before a group,
  • speaking loudly enough to be heard
  • varying tone for emphasis
  • maintaining eye contact
  • using notes cards with ease and to advantage
  • using hands, face, and body with ease and to assist in the impression of the speech
  • displaying freedom from distracting habits
  • presenting an introduction that captures the attention of the audience
  • generating arguments to support a thesis
  • achieving objectivity by looking at both sides of an issue
  • organizing ideas clearly and appropriately
  • choosing language that emphasizes and supports his composition
  • generating an appropriate conclusion

Speech II

The student in the Speech II class will perfect skills learned in Speech I and extend knowledge and skills to include the following behaviors:

  • Individual Events
  • Oratory
  • Extemp
  • Duo Reading
  • Duet - Memorization Script
  • Oral Interpretation
  • Prose and Poetry
  • Podcast
  • Character Event

Speech II Mandatory Assignment: Students must attend at least 5 events outside of the classroom. Events include formal presentations, lectures, speeches, seminars with guest speakers, etc. Events must be observed outside of the school environment. Students must also write a 200-300 word evaluation on the event. This assignment must be completed by Friday, May 18th! Must be turned in at one time and in a labeled folder.
