Business English

Course Description and Goals

It is the goal of this class for students to master the skills needed to be successful in a business environment. Throughout this course students will study common business correspondence, such as, memoranda, specialized letters, and technical reports. Students will also learn to read and write various business documents. Students will develop skills in the principles of grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary required in business transactions. Students will also practice speaking, listening, and communicating nonverbally in a business environment.

Business Communication

Unit goal: The literature, informational texts, and non-print texts studied in this course will equip students with the ethics, etiquette, and team working strategies that will prepare them for interviews and the job search.

Rhetoric

Culminating Writing Task

Which text in the unit most effectively employs the resources of language to achieve a desired effect on the intended audience? Why?

Unit Goal: You will read literary and informational texts which use rhetoric to advance a point of view or purpose. You will understand the differences between argument, persuasion, and propaganda based on how authors uses rhetoric to advance their perspective or purpose and the impact of rhetoric on the reader/listener. You will then express your understanding by evaluating the effectiveness of the unit texts and writing your own speech using rhetorical devices.
