Mrs. Wolk and Ms. Irwin’s class doing some word work to build their reading muscles. They know it will help them read those tricky words in their books!
GROWING OUR READING MUSCLES
The second grade children have already tackled their goal of improving their reading stamina, but they aren’t stopping there. In class they are working on how to figure out tricky words. As the year progresses the children will encounter more difficult vocabulary as their reading skills increase and the books become longer and more challenging. They are learning the saying. “When Words Are Tricky, Roll Up Your Sleeves” . With this idea the children are going through many steps to figure out what to do when they come across the “tricky words’. They will first look at pictures and think what would make sense. They can also stop and think about what is happening in the story so far. Some students may choose the strategy of looking at the whole word, and try to say it part by part, or find a word in a word that can help them. The most important strategy that is taught is to not give up. With this mindset the children are understanding that this is a learning process that takes time to develop and grow.
