Spotlight on First Grade

The First Graders are taking charge and working hard at “being the boss” of their own reading. As they grow as readers, the words in their books become longer and harder. The first graders remind themselves to be the boss by saying, “I can do this!” and stopping at the first sign of trouble. Our readers continue to practice their reading strategies and self-monitor their reading through a triple check (does it look right, does it sound right, and does it make sense?). The first graders are excited about their reading success and celebrated reading during Read Across America Week the first week of March. Classes celebrated with mystery readers, creating bookmarks, high school readers, and voting on their favorite books. The PTA also donated books to all School Street students to enjoy. Thank you to the PTA!
