SCHOOL STREET SCHOOL
UPDATES AND INFORMATION
UPDATES AND INFORMATION
Next week we will celebrate our love for reading through a variety of fun and engaging activities. Each day we will show our school spirit by wearing themed clothing.
Acceptance, Understanding, and Kindness
February is always a very busy month in first grade. In addition to our usual work in reading, writing, math, Fundations, science, and social studies, we have spent time enriching our curriculum with a variety of other studies over the last few weeks. We have continued our work to be our best bombers with a focus on BEING KIND for February. Our Valentine's read-alouds and celebrations helped us to broaden our understanding of friendships, the inclusion of all our SSS friends, and ways to treat everyone we meet with kindness each day.
We also spent some time learning about some very important people in history, such as Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., Ruby Bridges, and Jackie Robinson, just to name a few. Our first graders have looked into the important contributions these amazing people have had in standing up for what is right and being leaders in bringing more acceptance and peace to our world. We learned so much about being brave and standing up for ourselves by reading about, researching information, and talking about these influential black Americans.
Thanks to all of our enriching lessons, the first-grade classes will leave February with more acceptance, understanding, kindness, and peace in their hearts. We are on the road to becoming not just the best bombers that we can be but the best humans that we can be!
Habitats
The second-grade students have been busy learning about the different types of habitats that we have around our world. They took a dive into the oceans to learn about tide pools and compared them to wading into ponds. Back on land, they walked across savannahs, trekked through the rainforest, and hiked through the forest. In their explorations, they learned the importance of having an environment that can support plants and animals. They took this information and created a habitat mobile. Each student chose four different habitats to write about and illustrate creating a beautiful hanging design.
Congratulations to this week's winners who were called to choose from the prize box!
