Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade are invited to compete in the 2025-26 season of Oregon Battle of the Books.
Enrollment opens Wednesday, October 8th and closes on Tuesday, October 21st.
Students can register:
as a single interested participant. These students will be assigned a team within their grade level.
as a partial team of 2-3 participants. Additional team members will be assigned to these teams from within their grade level.
as a full team of 4-5 participants. Teams of 4 students may see an additional member assigned to their team from within their grade level based on the total number of students participating.
Bonny Slope teachers work with the OBOB Committee to match children that should be successful together to teams.
PRO TIP: When selecting your team name, do a quick Google search to make sure that it is appropriate to use at an elementary school. This is especially helpful if you are using an acronym. The OBOB committee and/or BSE may ask you to choose a different name if there is an issue with language, connotation, or content, or in the case of a duplicate team name.
My student and I understand and agree to all of the following:
Parents for EACH TEAM MEMBER must submit a Student Registration/Parent Permission Form. Each parent must give permission for their child to participate.
Participation in OBOB is completely optional, and is a significant time commitment. Students will be reading on their own time, outside of school hours. Teams may choose to meet with their teammates outside of school, but this is not required.
Each team will balance fairness and strategy in making decisions about preparation, responsibilities and battle rotations.
Parents agree to give students their space to develop decision making skills without undue interference.
Sportsmanship matters and should be expressly encouraged. All students are required to confirm the Sportsmanship agreement before each battle.
We have a high standard of sportsmanship and ask that students keep their comments positive and affirming to their teammates and opposing teams both during battles and in future interactions. All interactions should be positive and supportive before, during, and after battles. (This includes non-verbal reactions such as giggling, whispering, and hand gestures.) Poor sportsmanship will not be tolerated and may result in you and/or your team being disqualified.
Families understand that their child may have battles throughout the months of January, February, March (Regionals), and April (State). It is important that students are able to attend these battles.
The window for 2026 regional tournaments is March 1 – March 22, 2025.
The OBOB state tournament is scheduled for Saturday, April 11, 2026, at Chemeketa Community College in Salem.
Once a student has signed up for an OBOB team, s/he is making a commitment to a team. Withdrawing (without good reason) once a team has started studying is considered poor sportsmanship and leaves team members stranded. It is important to understand this responsibility to your teammates before you join a team.
FORMS DUE BY Tuesday October 21, 2025.
