There are lots of different ways to help as a volunteer
Parent Coach
Parent Coach
Parent coaches help keep their teams focused and provide opportunities to practice. Coordinate with the other parents on the team to set up book reviews, practice author/title pairing, and help review battle skills.
Outside of school. No sign up required.
Student Skill Builders
Student Skill Builders
These volunteers will help teach skills, work with the kids to practice, and help keep the kids focused.

Battle Judges
Battle Judges
There are three kinds of battle judges: The Question Reader, the Score Keeper, and the Timekeeper. The Score Keeper needs to attend the volunteer training. These are the most important volunteers to the success of OBOB.

There maybe some administrative or organizational tasks that can be done outside of school hours. If you are willing and able to help with those sorts of tasks, please email the OBOB committee to see if there is anything that needs more hands. Thank you in advance!
Want to start studying early?
Battles need judges. Some jobs require minimal training (time keeper and question reader) and some require more (scorekeeper). All jobs are ESSENTIAL! Shortly before battle season starts, there will be a training for battle judges. The slide deck below has all of the content that we will be using. Feel free to read the deck and take the quiz to test your knowledge. We can't be perfect but we can be consistent. The goal is to get all volunteers to understand the rules for consistent scoring across all of the battles.
Once you have studied the requirements to correctly score an OBOB battle, please click the button below to take the Scoring Judge Quiz. You must pass with a score of 20+ to act as a Scoring Judge in battle.
If you took the quiz at the training, you do NOT need to take it again here. If you were unable to attend the training and want to help as a Scoring Judge, please review the deck and take the quiz BEFORE signing up for shifts.
Extra Credit: After you have taken the quiz, try scoring one of the YouTube battles on the Team Resources page to try it out in a real battle scenario!
We will have a list of judges who are qualified when we assign battle judges at the school.
