Look for the signs. Understanding the behaviors helps you provide what they and you need, instead of reacting to the behaviors.

What does your child's behavior mean?

Whinning: feels powerless and difficulty coping. Often need a chance to cry and feel supported.

Bossy or controlling: worried that they are out of control and not getting their needs met.

Fighting or competing: struggling with feeling valued for who they are and disconected from parent/cargiver.

Not Listening: don't feel their wants or desires are being acknowledged.

Rebel against rules: usually need a chance to feel more powerful or competent.

Disrestpectful: struggling to feel connect to parent or caregiver. Don't feel heard or understood.

If your teen won't tell you what they need, they will show you. Use the chart on the right to see the behaviors and find possible reasons for them. Work with your teen to figure out how you can help them through it.
