Lavender Languages and Linguistics Conference 29

Boise State University | Boise, Idaho

 "Lavender Legacies, Rainbow Futures"

30 years of Lavender Languages

Thank you for an amazing conference! See you in May 2024 in Brighton, UK!

The Lavender Languages and Linguistics Conference is an international meeting of scholars in language, gender, and sexuality broadly understood, with presentations from many diverse subjects and interests throughout the humanities and social sciences.

The first Lavender Languages conference was held in 1993 at American University (AU) in Washington, DC, in conjunction with the National March on Washington, DC, which was the first major LGBTQ rights march in US history. Over the years, the conference has grown steadily from its roots at AU to traveling between the US and Europe in alternating years. This conference has regularly attracted participants from around the world, and welcomes scholars and students of all levels of experience to share their work in a supportive and collaborative conference environment.

This year's conference marks the 30th anniversary of the first Lavender Languages conference in 1993, and our theme for this year is "Lavender Legacies, Rainbow Futures" to reflect on the progress made in the past 30 years of the conference, as well as to look to the future of this rapidly growing area of study to broaden our scope and consider intersectional approaches, new methodologies, and encourage historically excluded scholars to bring their perspectives to the forefront of the future of the field.

The Conference proudly maintains a “no attitudes” atmosphere, and Lavender Languages and Linguistics 29 will retain its inclusive, supportive atmosphere; all students and scholars with interest in language and sexuality (broadly defined) will be welcome. The conference aims at being a safe space following the anti-harassment policy of the Association of Computational Linguistics

Since leaving American University to become a travelling conference, Lavender Languages has been held in many places around the world:

Catania, Italy (May 2022 - Hybrid)

San Francisco, CA, USA (March 2021 - Virtual)

Gothenburg, Sweden (May 2019)

Providence, RI, USA (April 2018)

Nottingham, United Kingdom (April 2017)
