Role-play events, or case studies are events that require students to think on their feet, as they work through a business specific situation- only having a limited amount of time to prepare. Students doing an individual Role-play get ten minutes of prep time, while students doing a team Role-play get fifteen minutes of prep time. After students use their prep time to look over their situation, they will present what they have concluded to a judge.
With the roleplay, there is also a 100 question exam, based on their event. The exam is used to determine the students knowledge on the content, and only takes up 1/3 of their score, their roleplay taking up the other 2/3.
The exams and roleplays are created based off of certain PERFORMANCE INDICATORS- based off of National Curriculum Standards and verified to be relevant to the real world. Students typically learn about these performance indicators, but extra preparation is always helpful.
To help you prepare for Role Play Events we recommend that you Study Performance Indicators, Take Practice Exams, and Do Practice Role Plays!
Principles of Business Administration Events
Principles of business administration events are for individual first-year DECA members. This event is only available to first-year DECA members. It is in the format of an interview where members have to combine several core concepts. For example "Principals of Marketing" combines concepts associated with careers in marketing communications, marketing management, marketing research, merchandising and professional selling, and would require participants to coherently combine them.
Team Decision Making Events
Team decision making events consist of a two-person team with onsite case studies that challenge participants to analyze elements based on the career area of the event. For example "Hospitality Services Team Decision Making" would require participants to analyze marketing strategies that can be used in hotels, motels, lodging services, convention services, and food and beverage services.
Personal Finance Literacy Event
The personal finance literacy events are for members enrolled in a personal finance class, instead of a marketing class whom are still participating in DECA. The member is asked to explain or demonstrate knowledge of personal financial literacy concepts, in the fourm of a role-play. It is designed to measure the participant's ability to apply reliable information and systematic decision making to personal financial decisions.
Individual Series Events
Individual series events are exactly like the team decision making events, but instead of being in a pair, the participant is individual. For example, "Hospitality and Tourism Professional Selling" is like the individual version of the team event mentioned, just a little diffrent, as its individual and you get less time.
