Matthew Clay

Director of Bands at Borah

Mr. Clay is the 4th Band Director at Borah Senior High School. Growing up in Washington, he moved to Boise to attend Boise State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. During his time at Boise state, he participated in many ensembles including The Blue Thunder Marching Band, The Boise State Jazz Ensemble, Boise State Symphonic Winds, and The Percussion Ensemble. Clay served in several leadership positions in these ensembles as well as principal percussionist of the symphonic winds for his last 4 years. He has over 18 years of experience as a percussionist, and more than 7 years as a music arranger and composer for groups such as the Boise State Drumline, Centennial High School Marching band, as well as the Borah High School Band. 

He is currently pursuing his Masters Degree in Music Education through the American Band College in Ashland, Oregon with plans to continue Teaching in the Treasure Valley.

Aaron O'Bar

Visual Tech/Writer for the Marching Band

Aaron is a Borah High School Alumni who served as Drum Major for the Roaring Lions Marching Band from 2017-2019. Originally a saxophone player, Aaron began participating in Drum Corps International as a Conductor during the 2019 season marching with the Troopers. Aaron returned to the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corp in 2020 and aged out in 2022 as Head Drum Major, leading them to their first Finals Performance in over a decade. Aaron currently serves as a Brass Technician for the Battalion Drums and Bugle Corps and has worked with various ensembles around the valley. 

Aaron has written the Drill for Borah's Marching Band program since 2022. 

Elloryn French

Visual Tech for the Marching Band

Elloryn is a Borah High School alum who graduated in 2024, she was asked to come back and be an additional visual tech alongside Aaron O’bar. She has over 10 years of experience playing Trombone in several band programs(Marching Band, Symphonic Band, and Jazz Ensemble) in the Boise School District where she specialized in Bass Trombone. Elloryn also spent several years participating in the Boise Philharmonic Youth Orchestra(BPYO), and multiple Boise State music camps. In the summer of 2023 she participated in Drum Corps International as a Baritone player marching with the Battalion Drum and Bugle Corps.

Elloryn also assists Aaron O'Bar in the visual writing for our Marching Band Program.

Ian Niblett

Front Ensemble instructor for the Marching Band

Ian grew up in the Treasure Valley and graduated from Meridian High School. They are currently attending Boise State University studying Music Education. They have been playing percussion for the last 11 years and currently participates in multiple ensembles at Boise State. They are currently a Section Leader for the Marching Band, Principle Percussionist for the Symphonic Winds, while also playing in the Pep Band, Orchestra, Jazz Combos, and Percussion Ensemble. 

Ian intends to graduate from Boise State University in Spring 2025 with their Bachelors degree and find a career teaching Music in the Treasure Valley.

Ella Gienapp

Color Guard Instructor for the Marching Band

Ella is a Cheyenne Central High School Alumni who served as a Colorguard member from 2016-2021 and Colorguard Captain from 2019-2021. Ella went on to pursue Drum Corps International for the next four years between 2021 and finally aging out in 2024. During her time at Troopers she served as the Colorguard Commander for the 2022, 2023, and 2024 seasons. She later went back to Central High School to teach as a Colorguard Tech for their 2021, and 2022 seasons. While pursuing her Drum Corps career she graduated from the University of Wyoming with her Bachelor of Science in Botany.
