Biomechanics is the study of cause and effect. It examines the internal and external forces on the body and the effects they produce (a force is a push or a pull) . Regardless of the movement skills you perform, they will all be governed by the laws of biomechanics. Understanding how a skill or movement is performed biomechanically is an important stepping stone to understanding how skills are learned and improved. So,we can use Biomechanics to make you a better player!
Stability skills involve the body balancing in either one place (static balance) or while in motion (dynamic balance). The ability to balance, whether stationary or moving is a key to success in most sports and physical activities.
Maintaining balance and stability in sporting performance has a number of benefits. It allows a person to put more force into a movement and complete that movement with accuracy and control
Gravity is the main force that acts on all parts of the body but it must be centred somewhere in the body. It acts in a “straight up and down” manner.
The Centre of Gravity (CoG) is the point in the body at which all parts of the body are in balance or the point at which gravity is centred.
When we stand in anatomical position, our CoG is located around the hip region – around the belly button. In men its approximately 57% of standing height and in women its 55%. The CoG is lower in women because more mass is concentrated around the hips (and thighs) in women.
The Line of Gravity (LoG) is a vertical line that MUST pass through our CoG. Wherever our CoG moves, the line of gravity will always pass through the CoG.
The Base of Support (BoS) are all parts of our body in contact with the ground or some other hard object such as a balance beam.
Now you have a greater understanding of Balance/Stability. Explain how you perform your chosen skill (Front Kick, Squat, Clean & Jerk) within the principles of Stability
