IRIS are the Institute for Research in Schools and they set up research projects for students of all school ages to take part in. Their aim is to open up opportunities for students to engage in scientific research and even contribute to the scientific community with their findings. At the end of each project, students will make an artefact (a poster or research article) which they will then present at an annual conference held in London.

The Cosmic Mining project provides data from the Spitzer Space Telescope for students to analyse. With this data students classify a variety of stellar objects and feed back to the Science and Technology Facilities Council who then use the analysis to find interesting objects for the new James Webb Space Telescope to look at in more detail once it gets launched in October 2021.
