3rd meeting - Romania

The topic of the Romanian meeting: Water and Health.

Italian school didn’t participate in this meeting. The Institute Council decided on 10th of November 2022 the suspension of the departure to Romania because of the war situation affecting the territories bordering Romania.

The students were preparing some activities on this topic. The pupils from classes 5-8 filled a questionnaire about their water drinking habits. By pupils’ answers participating students made a presentation and showed the effects of drinking water and lack of water for our health. The students made posters for the publicity of drinking enough water and we displayed them at the meeting. 

The students showed the activities of Happy Week. (This week is held for make people aware of drinking water). 

Hungarian students explained the role of the Hajdúnánás Spa in health promotion by a short presentation to the participants of the meeting. 

Students, together with students from other countries, participated in water chemistry experiments and workshops. 

In a fishing competition, we got to know the reservoir lake of Varsolt, from where the town's drinking water comes to the homes. 

We went on an excursion to the salt mines of Torda and the Illusions factory. 

We also visited the Botanical Garden of Zsibo. 

Teams of visiting students and students from the host school participated together in the activities of the meeting. On the part of the host school, school staff and parents of pupils were actively involved in the meeting's activities. Several employees of the municipal government, the local fire brigade and the fishing club took part in the local activities.

During the activities of the meeting, students took part in programmes that made them aware of saving water. Students and teachers learned about experiments and methods that they can apply in their own schools.

As part of the Erasmus+ project, we wanted to promote the importance of water in our lives within the community. Inscribed mugs were used to raise awareness among the community about the importance of drinking water.

We used the fishing competition to raise awareness of the importance of aquatic life.

At the botanical garden from Jibou and at the salt mine from Turda, we popularised the role of water in our lives with the help of scarves and backpacks.

At the fire station from Simleul Silvaniei , we learned about the role of water in a fire disaster.

Dancing grapes

This is the way to produce clean water during a long trip.

Equipment needed: sparkling water, grape seeds

Fill the glass with soda water and drop a grape seed in it! The grape seed will sink to the bottom of the glass. It doesn't take long, it will come to the surface in 20-30 seconds and then sink back down after a short spin. This time, without counting to ten, it rises to the surface. Down again, then up again, we can admire its tireless "dance" for a long time.

The density of the grape is greater than that of water, so if you drop it in the water it sinks. Its ascent can only be explained by a closer look.

You can observe that tiny gas bubbles are multiplying and growing on the ashy skin of the grape. When they have adhered to the skin in sufficient numbers, like balloons on a light load, they lift the grape.

Hot and cold water. Wich is the most heaviest?

Tools needed:

• 4 identical glasses

• set of cards

• Blue and red food colouring

• very hot water

• Icy water 

When the ice water, the thickest one, is placed on top, its density forces it to sink all the way to the bottom of the glass. When very hot water is placed on top, its density causes it to stay on the surface of the ice water, as if floating on top of it. Therefore it does not mix immediately, just when the temperature difference between the two waters is smaller.
