Boardman Glenwood Junior High School has developed a makerspace club for students. Our design lab is a space for students to utilize a variety of tools and materials to create products or inventions using the engineering/design process.
Some tools in our lab are 3D printers, drills, drill presses, bandsaws, computers, various cutting tools, glue stations, work tables, sanders, calipers, hand tools, craft materials, cardboard, etc.
Makers sessions can take on different forms for members.
One form is a design challenge. Students work during a timed session to complete a task. For example, using the following materials, design a device that can entertain a small child on a long travel day.
Another form involves an ongoing creation or project. Students work on an ongoing project that interests them. It might be an invention they are developing or just creating an object or device that sparked their interest. They have access to the tools and materials in the lab and are guided by the instructor(s) there.
