Who is (or was) Steve Irwin?
How did he die?
What was his life like?
What does all this mean for the symbolism he carries as an Australian icon?
Put the top 5 biggest cities on the map.
How long would it take to travel by car between the cities farthest apart?
1. Look up the word "designated" - then translate the first sentence: "Botany Bay was the designated settlement for the first fleet when it arrived in Australia in the eighteenth century".
2. Make a glossary of alle the words you need to look up in the lyrics to "Botany Bay" as you can read it on Wikipedia (see link below). For example:
- Old Bailey (s)
- to "cut a swell" (idiom)
- tooralli, ooralli, addity
- ay
- bosun
- ticker
- soar
- pinions
Non-standard language is when people's dialects or sociolects make them speak or write differently from what is considered grammatically correct English (spoken, for example, by the British Queen). This has traditionally been considered a humorous effect! Can find examples of Non-Standard language?
The light and humorous mood in the song is in part created by the imagery and the words used in the song. Here are some things to consider:
1) The melody of the song is lively and good-humored. Talk about what happens to the "I-speaker" in each of the stanzas. Can you find examples of humor in the song's plot? OR: what happens to the I-speaker, which could be considered funny?
2) Sometimes, the use of slang can be funny, too. Slang is mostly funny, when it is used to make things that are sad or serious seem lighter. Can you find examples of slang?
3) The use of non-sense words in songs and rhymes is a feature in many children's songs and old folk songs. Find examples of non-sense words in this song, and see if you can come up with some Danish children- or folksongs that feature the same use of non-sense words.
