It is highly recommended that students take either the SATs or the ACTs in the spring of Junior Year. We also recommend that students retest at the beginning of their Senior Year. Students should contact their school counselor if their receive free or reduced lunch, as this would make them eligible for a fee waiver.

All students will have the opportunity to take the PSAT (practice SAT) in October of their Sophomore Year. Students can elect to take the PSAT for a second time during October of their Junior Year. After testing for the first time, school counselors will work with students to link their College Board accounts with Khan Academy to receive personalized practice based on the results of their PSATs.

The SAT is a standardized test that scores students based on mathematical problem solving, critical thinking, and verbal reasoning. The score range for the SAT is 400-1600, with each section (Evidence-based reading/writing & Math) having a score range of 200-800. We recommend that students sign up for the SAT during spring of their Junior Year and consider retesting early in their Senior Year.
The ACT is a three hour exam which covers four skill areas: English, math, reading, and science reasoning. There is also an optional writing section of the test. The ACT is scored on a scale of 1-36. We recommend that students sign up for the ACT during spring of their Junior Year and consider retesting early in their Senior Year.
ACT TEST DATES 2025-2026
Prior to, and as a result of the pandemic, many schools have gone "test-optional." This means that they do not require standardized test scores as part of their application, but will consider scores if sent. Some schools also use scores for scholarship opportunities. Advanced Placement (AP) Courses are upper-level courses that students can elect to take in high school. They are designed to prepare students for the rigor of a college-level course, and they culminate in an end-of-year exam that can be translated to college credit with certain scores. There are a range of AP courses taught by BMR teachers, and students can also elect to take an AP course through Virtual High School (VHS).
