SAP Appeal Update
This message pertains to students who submitted a Fall 2024 SAP appeal:
As you are aware, the Fall Term has concluded. Upon reviewing their accounts, you may notice the absence of a Spring Pell award (if eligible) and the presence of an FT4 hold. Please note that this hold cannot be removed until all Fall grades have been posted.
Once the grades are available, the SAP team will evaluate the students' records to ensure they are meeting the academic plan. If the student meets the requirements, the hold will be removed, and no further action will be required from the student. If not, the SAP team will maintain the FT4 hold on the student’s account and initiate a new Spring SAP appeal through Student Forms. If they have any questions regarding Spring aid, please inform students that processing may take a few weeks.
Withdrawals and the Return of Federal Financial Aid
Students who drop courses on November 5th or after (for the Fall '24 Regular semester) will have "earned" their federal financial aid award(s), and are entitled to receive 100% (all) of their assistance. This means they will not have to pay back the awards and will not be penalized; however, students should be aware that repeatedly dropping courses can negatively affect their financial aid eligibility later on.
For more information, visit BMCC website: https://www.bmcc.cuny.edu/finaid/learn/grants/withdrawals-and-the-return-of-federal-financial-aid/
Bursar Holds Placed
Student accounts with cumulative balances from Summer and Fall 2024 terms, over $500.00, will have a BIH hold placed. Balances for Spring 2024 and all prior terms must be paid in full; meaning, any amount owed from the Spring term or before, will have to be paid completely for the BIH hold to be removed. Callers looking for more information should be transferred to the Bursar's line or told to contact bursar@bmcc.cuny.edu.
Bursar Office Updated Hours
Please note the new office hours for Bursar's office, effective 10/14/2024 are as follows:

International Student Enrollment Requirement
This notice serves to clarify the enrollment requirements for F-1 international students to maintain their visa status:
Full-Time Enrollment: F-1 students must be enrolled as full-time students. Typically, full-time enrollment is defined as taking at least 12 credits or four classes per semester.
Online Course Limitation: Out of the four classes that F-1 students are required to take, only one course can be taken online. The remaining three courses must be conducted in person.
ePermit Courses: F-1 students are allowed to take up to three ePermit classes, provided that these courses are conducted in person.
Please ensure that these guidelines are communicated clearly to all F-1 students to help them maintain compliance with their visa requirements.
Summer PELL Grant Issue on CUNYfirst
The CUNYFirst system had a technical problem and accidentally deleted Summer PELL grant awards. CUNY Central has been notified and is trying to resolve the issue. Please direct students to keep an eye on their CUNYFirst accounts for updates on when the awards will be restored.
CUNY Start Program
After one semester in CUNYSTART, many students become fully proficient in their skills and can start taking college-credit English and math classes, or they significantly reduce their developmental needs. For instance, CUNYSTART students currently enrolled in a Math Start summer course will be able to matriculate for Fall 2024.
Registrar Notice
If a caller asks for grades, please direct them to log onto their CUNYfirst account, where grades are posted at the end of the term. For ongoing classes, they need to speak directly with their professor for grading information; online courses will have grades on Brightspace. If the caller persists, inform them that we do not have access to provide this information.
SAP Appeal Summer 2024
You may receive calls from students who believe their GPA is sufficient or who filed a SAP appeal last semester and do not understand why they are receiving this communication. Please note that SAP appeals are term-specific. To continue receiving financial aid after a specific term, students must follow the academic plan created by their advisor. This plan specifies the classes to take and the grades needed. If students do not achieve the required grades, they must submit another appeal for the following term.
If a student has the Task to file the appeal, it means they must submit the appeal to receive financial aid. Advise the student to contact Academic Advisement to start the appeal process.
For your reference, here are the steps to complete a SAP appeal: https://bmccprodstroac.blob.core.windows.net/uploads/2023/06/How-to-Complete-your-SAP-Appeal.pdf
The deadline for Summer SAP appeals is Wednesday, 7/10/24. For further information or assistance, please have the student email titleiv@bmcc.cuny.edu
Non-degree Application Processing Delay
Admissions has received several inquiries regarding non-degree application statuses. Currently, there are approximately 350 pending non-degree applications dating back to April 2nd, 2024, all of which require manual processing. Admissions assures that they are diligently addressing non-degree processing alongside other daily inquiries. Please complete the SRF for applicants inquiring on the status of their application; response times are estimated at 3 to 5 business days.
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Tuition Waiver
BMCC is offering a STEM Tuition Waiver for eligible students this summer. To qualify, students must:
Be degree-seeking at BMCC
Be a US citizen or permanent resident, and a New York State resident
Must enroll in a Mathematics, Science, or Computer Science course that counts toward completion of their listed degree

Additionally, students must register for Summer 2024 courses by May 14 for classes starting May 28 and by June 10 for classes starting July 18. Waivers are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis due to limited funding. Students granted a waiver will receive notification to their BMCC email by the week of May 20 for the first summer session and by the week of July 1 for the second session.
Students must complete the summer course(s); failure to do so may result in the revocation of the waiver and responsibility for tuition fees. If students have questions not answered by this information, they can reach out at AATC@bmcc.cuny.edu
Completion Tuition Waiver
BMCC is offering a Completion Tuition Waiver for eligible students this summer. To qualify, students must:

Be a US citizen or permanent resident, and a New York State resident
Have three or fewer courses left to complete their associate degree requirements
Enroll in courses that count toward the completion of their listed BMCC degree.
The tuition waiver covers $210 per credit, but only the tuition for the course will be waived; students are responsible for fees and materials like textbooks.
Financial Aid: 2024-2025 FAFSA Application
BMCC has just started to receive 2024-25 processed FAFSA. CUNY Central is going to be sending out communications to students probably in the next week or two to let them know if they need to go back into their FAFSA to make corrections so that their FAFSA can be processed. As of now, FAFSA is not "open" to make any corrections - their message is "we expect that online corrections will be available in the coming weeks".
We might be receiving a high volume of calls regarding this. The best advice we can give is to make the necessary corrections when the form is open. If the form is open when they call and they are having difficulties, you can forward the student to the Panther station.
Lastly, students who have stated that they cannot provide parent information and are requesting to be independent will also receive communication shortly for their next steps.
SAP Appeal update (Spring 2024)
The deadline for Spring 2024 SAP appeals is April 3, 2024. At this time, SAP appeals for Spring are the only appeals that are being accepted. Students who upload an academic plan for Summer/Fall 2024 before the Spring deadline will have their submission rejected. Lastly, remember that rollovers are not permitted from one academic year to the next; this means if a student is approved to receive aid for the Spring term, it is not guaranteed they will receive aid for Summer/Fall. The Spring appeal only applies for Spring awards; to continue receiving aid a student would have to follow the academic plan provided for their Spring Appeal or submit a new SAP appeal.
Students can contact the SAP Team for more information at SAP@bmcc.cuny.edu
Enrollment Outreach
Enrollment Management has begun reaching out to certain students to help them enroll for the express 8-week session. These students were contacted because they were unable to enroll either due to a Bursar hold or Financial Aid hold; also contacted were students who were advised but have not yet registered. Some students may have been informed of the possibility of receiving up to $2,000 for a past-due balance; students should be directed to contact station@bmcc.cuny.edu for more information.
Financial Aid: 2024-2025 FAFSA Major Changes
Due to the major changes to the FAFSA for the 2024-2025 year, students will not be able to get assistance completing the 2024-25 application until late March/April.
Admissions Inquiries Reminder
The Admissions Office has directed us to submit an SRF for ALL Admissions-related inquiries. Please refrain from sending messages on Teams as they are likely not to respond. If callers do not want an SRF escalation submitted for them, they may contact Admissions directly via email at admissions@bmcc.cuny.edu or they can visit the Panther Station. This is key to remember during this busy time.
Status on Spring 2024 Financial Aid Awards
Students who do not have their Spring '24 Federal Pell Grant listed on their account because of a Fall '23 Title IV hold can expect to see their awards by the end of January. This is contingent on them following the academic plan established in their Fall '23 SAP Appeal. If they did not follow the academic plan, they will not be eligible for financial aid as another Title IV hold will be placed on their account. The Financial Aid Office began conducting SAP reviews on 01/09/24 and the process takes approximately two weeks. SAP appeal links and holds will be placed at the end of this process (by the end of the month).
Spring 2024 Completion Grant
The Completion Grant is a scholarship funded by BMCC to help students finish their degree; it helps them by covering a past-due balance, allowing them to enroll in classes for their last 1-2 semester(s). The deadline for the Spring 2024 term was 01/05/24. For students inquiring about the status of their grants, please have them email Sussie Gyamfi at sgyamfi@bmcc.cuny.edu or scholarships@bmcc.cuny.edu
Spring 2024 Title IV SAP Appeal
Students who submitted an appeal for the Fall 2023 term and were approved, will have an FT4 hold for the Spring 2024. Financial Aid is currently waiting for Fall grades to come-in to determine if they can remove the hold or initiate a new SAP transaction. If so, this new FSAPSP transaction/checklist item will allow students to resubmit an appeal for the Spring term. If you encounter this scenario, please inform the student that this is closely monitory grades and Financial Aid will post items accordingly. Once Financial Aid post this new checklist item, students will automatically receive a communication and the SAP/Spring appeal will be visible in Student Forms.
Registrar Update
Financial Aid SAP Appeal: Students must log into CUNY Student Forms to check their SAP Appeal status. When callers ask about the status of their SAP appeal, direct them to log into their account: https://bmccprodstroac.blob.core.windows.net/uploads/2023/11/How_To_View_SAP_Appeal_Status.pdf
Miscellaneous Appeal: Due to the sensitive nature of miscellaneous appeals, we cannot provide status updates over the phone. Students inquiring on the status of a miscellaneous appeal should be directed to email registrar@bmcc.cuny.edu
Academic (CAS) Appeal: Students inquiring on the status of a CAS appeal can be given this information. Feel free to reach out to the Registrar on Teams or check the Excel sheet.
Enrollment Verification: Any student requesting an enrollment verification, please direct them to email registrar@bmcc.cuny.edu. The Registrar will respond within 1-2 business days. If a student goes in person, they will not get it immediately, therefore emailing the request is best.
Transcripts: Always direct students to order their transcripts online regardless of how/when they took classes at BMCC. If a student indicates they do not have access to a computer please get their address and the Registrar can mail them a form; the student must complete it and mail it back to the Registrar. This should be done only in extreme cases.
Registration Requests: All registration requests including requesting to be added/dropped/reinstated require a written request from the student. Always direct students to email registrar@bmcc.cuny.edu and include the following in their email: name, CUNYfirst ID and course number.
Non-Compliant MMR Update
Registrar has assigned WA grades to a list of students due to MMR immunization non-compliance. Please direct these students to Health Services to submit the required paperwork to resolve this issue. If the students submit the required documentation to Health Services the WA grades can be removed. Registrar will remove the WA after receiving an email from a staff member in Health Services.
Federal Work Study (FWS)
If a student is calling and wants to submit documents for FWS, they need to go in-person to the Federal Work Study office to see Melissa Jardine. The Panther Station does not process Federal Work Study-related documents.
The FWS office is located in room N370.
Office hours: Wednesday & Thursday 10am-1pm and 2pm-4pm.
Financial Aid + Fall Express
Question: What does this mean for my financial aid if I take credits in multiple terms in the fall semester?
Answer: BMCC’s Fall 7-week and 8-week sessions are considered part of the fall term. Students may be eligible to receive PELL and/or TAP for attending the fall express sessions.
Please note that if a student enrolls in both the 15-week/7-week sessions and the 8-week session, registration for all sessions must occur by August 31 and the student’s financial aid eligibility will be based on enrollment as of September 1. If additional courses are added for the 8-week session after August 31, those course(s) cannot be used to determine the student’s financial aid eligibility.
However, if a student enrolls only for the 8-week session without enrolling in the 15-week/7-week session by October 26, then the student will be eligible for financial aid for all courses in the 8-week session.
Students who have questions about their financial aid eligibility should speak to their advisor.
Zelle Payment Option
If you receive a call and the student states they made a payment toward their balance through Zelle, please note that this is a payment option the Bursar’s Office offers in certain cases. If a payment is not shown on CUNYfirst, we recommend contacting a bursar representative on Teams to confirm a Zelle payment was processed successfully. Please continue to advertise our regular payment options to our students: Cash, money order, check and E-check, debit or credit (online only). If you have any questions, please stop by the zoom room and we will further assist, Thank you.

Important Update regarding SAP Appeals, Previously Known as Title IV Appeals
Title IV Appeals are now known as SAP Appeals, but Title IV holds still indicate that the student must submit the appeal. Below are detailed instructions for students on how to access the form and submit the SAP Appeal. Please familiarize yourself with this information and advise students accordingly. Additionally, please note that students must have a 2023-2024 FAFSA on file in order to complete the Appeal.
So, why aren't students meeting SAP? It could be one of three reasons.
Minimum GPA — You must have the GPA needed to meet the college’s minimum retention standard (that is, you cannot be on academic probation, special probation or academic dismissal).
Maximum Time-frame — You may not attempt more than 150% of the credits normally required to earn your degree (that is, you cannot attempt more than 90 credits to earn 60).
Pace of Progression — You must successfully complete a certain percentage of the total number of credits that you attempt.
Learn more about SAP here: https://www.bmcc.cuny.edu/finaid/learn/federal-work-study/federal-satisfactory-academic-progress-standard/
Please keep in mind that as part of the appeal process, each student is required to have a meeting with their academic advisor. During this meeting, the advisor will assess why the student is not meeting the SAP requirements and collaborate on developing an academic plan moving forward. As a general guide, students should navigate to their "To Do List" in CUNYfirst to view the "SAP checklist item" and click on the link to access the new platform. The following links provide detailed guidance...

CUNY to Waive Application Fee for HS Seniors at New York City Public Schools
The City University of New York announced that it is waiving the $65 application fee for New York City public high school seniors who apply between March 1 and April 15 to attend a CUNY college in Fall 2023. This six-week initiative applies to all New York City Public Schools seniors who are graduating between January and August 2023 and planning to start college in Fall 2023. About 82% of CUNY’s first-time freshmen attended city public schools. This six-week fee waiver will cast a much wider net, allowing all seniors in New York City public schools to apply at no cost, without having to request a waiver code, and regardless of the family’s financial circumstances .The free application is intended to incentivize thousands of seniors who have come to believe that college is not an option and still have not applied. The program will also free high school guidance counselors from distributing the fee waiver codes allowing them to spend more of their time helping students choose a CUNY college that fits their academic profile and career goals.
Important information regarding WN and WD grades
One of the reasons WNs override a WD is for financial aid repercussions: if a professor indicates that a student has not attended/participated through the VOE roster, then Registrar assigns the WN to indicate that the student is not eligible for financial aid since they did not attend. A student is partially eligible for financial aid if they have a WD; WDs are paid at a percentage based on how many days the student attended the class. Agents reach out to Registrar or Financial Aid for any further questions or clarification needed for specific cases.
