English 9 is the required English class for ninth grade students not in Honors English 9. Students should expect stricter, more advanced academic requirements than he/she found in previous English classes. Literature study will include understanding, enjoying and analyzing the short story, non-fiction, the novel, poetry and drama. The students will also work on vocabulary, communication and writing development. The students will develop their research skills and study skills, test-taking skills and listening and speaking skills. Each student is required to complete a research paper.

English 11 is the American Literature and Composition class for the eleventh-grade student. The course consists of reading and discussing novels, essays, short stories, plays and poetry by American authors. Communication skills, oral and written, are reinforced and developed. Composition skills will be stressed through numerous essays, projects and a research paper. Grammar and vocabulary, with an emphasis on the ACT, will be taught.

The goal of this course is to engage students to become skilled readers of prose written in a variety of contexts and to become skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes. Students completing this course will be able to write effectively and confidently in their college courses across the curriculum and in their professional lives. We will emphasize the expository, analytical and argumentative writing and reading that forms the basis of academic and professional communication. Students will need to plan time in their schedule for a significant amount of reading and writing. The AP exam will be given in May.

This course provides the senior student with a background in British/World literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to the Twentieth century. The student should have a firm foundation in composition skills to facilitate analysis of various aspects of literature and to be able to write a comprehensive research paper. The students will also focus on vocabulary development and oral communication skills.

In this course, students have the opportunity to participate in the College Credit Plus program through Hocking College. There is the possibility that students can receive a Freshman English Composition credit by the end of the semester. Students will parallel the English 12 syllabus but with an intense composition focus.

This course is for juniors and seniors who enjoy acting and want a more in-depth study of the theatre. We will perform 4-6 plays, concentrating on the cultural, structural and autobiographical components of each drama. In addition, we will work on improvisational skills, memorization, acting techniques and character analysis. Students will be required to perform almost daily with several skits memorized.

This course is designed to teach students the skills required for strong oral communication. We will focus on varying methods of analyzing and addressing an audience. Some speeches will be prepared ahead of time, requiring research and documentation, while others will be delivered impromptu. Students will be supported in overcoming communication apprehension and learning to exemplify the skills of a well-rounded public speaker. The course is highly recommended for college-bound sophomores, juniors and seniors as Communications is a prerequisite course required by most 4-year institutions. Students may have the opportunity to earn CCP credit in this course.
