Principles of Engineering

Welcome to POE elective.

This elective class is offered to students in grades 9 to 12. POE elective will be offered depending on student enrollment and the high school schedule. There is no guarantee from year to year the POE elective will be offered to students.

Currently there is no pre-requisite to enroll in POE class however, it is a good idea to talk with your science, math and the POE teacher prior to signing up for this elective.

Depending on enrollment from year to year an honors level class may be offered to students in grades 11 & 12.

The world needs engineers capable of handling more and more complex and varied problems. There are so many different types of engineering job opportunities that it would probably fill 15 pages of text ! The 4 core engineering disciplines are MECHANICAL, ELECTRICAL, CIVIL & CHEMICAL. All additional engineering disciplines are hybrids of the 4 main categories.

For example, computer hardware and software design is a hybrid of mechanical & electrical. Software is basically a mathematical language that instructs electrical & mechanical systems.

The disciplines of math, physics, biology and chemistry create the foundation for all engineering programs thus the student now needs to apply their foundation knowledge & skills to investigate and solve complex problems. Communication skills are tested when the student is asked to recite the function and analysis of the systems being studied via oral and written lab report(s).

A big thank you to Mr. Glickman for his help with the course syllabus.
