STUART NICHOLLS
HIGHER EDUCATION PROGRESSION ADVISOR: SHAPING FUTURES
WHAT DOES YOUR DAY TO DAY JOB ROLE CONSIST OF?
As a 'Higher Education Progression Advisor' (HEPA), my role involves liaising with schools across Merseyside and networking with teachers, students and parents alike to engage in a programme of activities and 'one to one' guidance interventions aimed at raising aspirations through 'Higher Education' opportunities.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO YOU NEED TO DO YOUR JOB?
For this type of role, you ideally need to have at least a Level 6 qualification such as a 'Degree' in any subject/discipline.
WHAT WAS YOUR HIGHER EDUCATION PATHWAY?
After a complete career change at the age of 23, I managed to secure an employed 'Trainee Careers Advisor' role with the local 'Careers Service' where I combined University study alongside paid employment. Within this position, I completed the Diploma in Careers Guidance Parts 1 & 2 with the local Government Management Board & University of Glamorgan (Level 6) alongside the Advice, Guidance, Counselling & Psychotherapy NVQ Level 4.
WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT YOUR JOB?
I really enjoy the interaction with young people, particularly having those aspirational conversations where an individual experiences a 'lightbulb' moment and realises that their future career path can be both achievable and rewarding.
WHAT PROGRESSION IS AVAILABLE IN YOUR CAREER?
If the opportunity presented itself, the next progression step could be a Managerial/Supervisory position, looking after a team of Higher Education Advisors.
AND FINALLY...
...IF YOU WERE A BISCUIT, WHICH ONE WOULD YOU BE AND WHY?
Hmm, great question! Definitely the 'Happy Faces' biscuit! This little guy aims to make you smile, is a triple whammy with jam, shortbread and cream (unlike the cream-less Jammy Dodger) and sports the same haircut as me!...it's the biscuit that just keeps giving!
