Course Description and Aims
Science at BISR includes three main units of study: Biology, Chemistry and Physics and follows the English National Curriculum. There are four topics within each unit. We use Pearson’s ‘Exploring Science International’ package as the basis for our Year 7 course. The textbook we use is the 'Exploring Science International Year 7 Student Book'.
Along with learning the subject content, pupils will also be developing their science skills in line with the National Curriculum.
These key skills are linked to developing an understanding of scientific attitudes, experimental skills and investigations along with analysis and evaluation.

Course Outcomes
In Science at BISR we aim to:
Enthuse children in learning science and develop a lifelong passion for the subject.
Equip children for success in science in KS3 and KS4 and beyond.
Inspire children to ‘think scientifically’, to interrogate the world around them using scientific method.
Types of Assessment
Pupils will be assessed constantly throughout the course using online quizzes, written and verbal questioning and exam style questions. All of our assessments are low stakes and designed to encourage learning and success.
Methodology
Pupils will be taught science in a variety of different teaching styles that incorporates Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic activities. There will be times when pupils work individually, in pairs or in groups hence developing their communication skills. Self and peer assessment will be undertaken throughout the lessons, enabling pupils to understand how to improve.
Text and Materials
Every child will have access to online textbooks. Other documents will be shared through Google Classroom. In the physical classroom, children will be given a workbook for written work, and there will be physical textbooks available. If your child feels that a physical copy of the textbook is essential for home, then they can be signed out from the library. If you are interested in getting your own copy of the Pearson 'Exploring Science International' textbook we use, you can find a link to it here. As a small note, we now use the new addition to the textbook shown in the video.
Grading Policy
Grades are out of 9 and are based on all their quizzes, tests and performance in class.
STEAM
In addition to their Science lessons, Year 7 children will have STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) experiences throughout the year. These experiences are tailored to allow our children to experience real world challenges and to use their knowledge and skills learnt in STEAM subjects to find practical solutions. The children love the hands-on creative nature of these challenges.
