THE 18 RULES OF GOLF THAT GET USED THE MOST
1. Red Lateral Hazard
Option 1 – Play it from the hazard
Option 2 – Replay the shot from the original position incurring a stroke and distance penalty
Option 3 – Draw a line from the hole to where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard and drop anywhere behind that point keeping the point between you and the hole incurring a 1 shot penalty.
Option 4 – go to the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard and drop within 2 club lengths, no nearer the hole, on either side of the hazard incurring a 1 shot penalty.
2. Yellow Water Hazard
Option 1 – Play it from the hazard
Option 2 – Replay the shot from the original position incurring a stroke and distance penalty
Option 3 – Draw a line from the hole to where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard and drop anywhere behind that point keeping the point between you and the hole. You would incur a 1 shot penalty
3. Lost Ball or Out-of-Bounds
After looking for a maximum of 5 minutes, you must go back to where the shot was originally played from, and replay, incurring a stroke and distance penalty.
4. Unplayable Lie
Option 1 – Take 2 club lengths relief no closer to the hole and assess a 1 stroke penalty
Option 2 – Replay the shot from the original position incurring a stroke and distance penalty
Option 3 – Take the ball back as far as you want keeping the point where the ball lays between you and the hole incurring a 1 shot penalty
5. Improving Your Swing Path
You cannot bend, break or hack anything growing or fixed if it improves you lie, your stance, or your area of intended swing.
The penalty for doing so is loss of hole in match play, or a 2 shot penalty in stroke play.
6. Unplayable Lie in a Bunker
Option 1 – Take a drop of no more than 2 club lengths no closer to the hole, but still in the bunker incurring a 1 shot penalty
Option 2 – Replay the shot from the original position incurring a stroke and distance penalty
Option 3 – Go back as far as you like in the bunker and drop keeping that spot where your ball laid between you and the hole. This incurs a 1 shot penalty
7. Removing Objects in a Bunker
You may not move or remove any loose impediments in the bunker unless they are foreign to the area. Example – you may remove a candy wrapper but not a pine cone or tree branch
8. Number of Allowed Clubs
You are only allowed to carry 14 clubs in your bag. The penalty for carrying more than 14 clubs:
Match Play – Loss of hole – maximum of 2 holes
Stroke Play – 2 strokes per hole up to a maximum of 2 holes or 4 shots
9. Casual Water
Find your nearest point of relief no closer to the hole where neither you or your ball lie in water that can be seen without pressing your feet up and down. You may then drop your ball within 1 club length from that point no nearer to the hole at no penalty.
10. Grounding Your Club in a Hazard
Practice swings may be taken inside a hazard as long as you don’t touch the ground, sand or water with your club. The top of the grass may be touched during a practice swing. The penalty for grounding your club is loss of the hole in match play or a 2 shot penalty in stroke play.
11. Accidentally Moving Your Ball
There is a 1 stroke penalty for accidentally moving your ball and it must be replaced in its original position before hitting. There is another 1 stroke penalty for hitting the ball from the wrong place if it is not replaced. There is no penalty for accidentally moving the ball when on the tee.
12. Removing Loose Impediments
If, in moving loose impediments, you accidently move your ball, you must return the ball to its original position and penalize yourself one stroke.
13. Asking for Advice
It’s against the rules of golf to ask an opponent what club they have hit. The penalty for this breech is loss of hole in match play, or a 2 shot penalty in stroke play.
14. Ball on a Cart Path
You are entitled to free relief.
Step 1 – Determine the “nearest point of relief”. This is the point where the ball would lay affording the player both swing and stance from the cart path.
Step 2 – you are entitled to 1 club length reliefrom the point where the ball would lie once full relief is taken.
Step 3 – After dropping, the ball may roll up to 2 club lengths no closer to the hole.
15. Changing Club Characteristics
Clubs may not be altered in any way once play has begun. If a club is altered during the normal course of play, such as bending it after hitting a tree while attempting to hit the ball, the club may be taken to the shop for immediate repair and a replacement club may be used until the original club is repaired.
If the club is modified outside the normal course of play, such as breaking or bending it in a fit of anger, it must be taken out of play for the remainder of the match. Should it be used again the penalty is disqualification, whether match or stroke play.
16. How to Drop the Ball
After determining the nearest point of relief, you may stand outside the drop area, no closer to the hole, and extend your hand to the side dropping the ball from waist height. The ball may roll up to 2 club lengths no closer to the hole. If the ball rolls farther than that you must re-drop. If after dropping 2 times the ball continues to roll past 2 club lengths, you must place the ball where it first touched the ground.
17. Repairing the Line of your Putt
You may repair any ball marks in your line and removed any pebbles or foreign objects in your line, provided you do it with your hand or club. You may not fix spike marks or fan the ground with a towel or cap to remove sand or foreign objects. The penalty for doing so is loss of hole in match play or a 2 shot penalty in stroke play.
18. Hitting the Wrong Ball
The penalty for hitting the wrong ball in match play is loss of hole. If both players hit the wrong ball, only the first player to do so would be penalized as that would be the end of the hole.
The penalty for hitting the wrong ball in stroke play for either player is 2 strokes and the original ball must be replayed from its original position.

Due to the insane weather and change in schedules, I would like to still have a parent meeting to inform all parents of the specifics in our sport and crazy short season with a number of new players.
In the event that you are not able to make it, I will try to provide the information. If there is anything you are wondering about please reach out to me or one of the coaches through email, and I can follow up with a phone call if need be.
Meeting will be tomorrow, 7:30pm at LHS in room B109. I plan it taking about 30-45 minutes.
Hope to see you all there,
Coach Zainhofsky
2021 Season
Week of 5/4-5/8
I thought as we approach the summer, many of you have been out on the range, golf course, or still putting time in at home. It is time we start looking at different parts to our golf game that you can specifically work on as you continue to improve your abilities and knowledge. The videos I came across do a great job of addressing many different aspects.
Please take a look through the videos and see which area you would like to look at and then go on to the next. It makes practicing less monotonous and much more effective. Enjoy!
4/28-5/1 - THE DRIVER
Now we move into the area that all golfers love especially HIGH SCHOOL PLAYERS!
I know that so many times the one club we worry the most about in our bags and most often bragged about is your weapon of choice off the tee! With that being said, it is also one of the biggest reasons you take the BIGGEST scores on a given hole.
This video does a great job of showing the following aspects:
-alignment
-ball position
-once again "rotation" of your hips and shoulders
-once again "releasing the club" at the proper time
The further you get into the game of golf, the more you will see specific aspects popping up time and time again into various parts of the game! Have fun out there practicing and try to experiment with different things.
I learned the most when I went out and physically saw the cause and effect of changing things. What worked best for me to lower my scores was not always what we worked on in practice or the advice the head pro offered me while I was grinding away on the range or practice green.
Driver Basics For Longer Straighter Golf Shots
4/21-4/24 - We are going to look at this video for the week that shows three tips that will help you with your golf swing. We have used similar drills in the past with more of the veteran players for keeping your balance throughout the swing.
3 Drills That Will TRANSFORM Your GOLF SWING
Step #1 - I have used this in practices in the past to show how to stop the "rocking" motion of the swing, and also hitting a relatively lengthy shot without the swinging out of your shoes mentality. (This can be done with or without a golf ball)
Step #2 - This drill emphasizes the importance of opening the shoulders and body to the target. If you are hitting balls and the ball heads way towards the right, that shows that you are casting or releasing the club too early and not rotating the shoulders through the shot and facing toward the target. *Remember, your belly button and shoulders should point to your target on your follow through.
Step #3 - This is an interesting one to me as I never have tried it myself! I like the fact that it would slow down the tempo and force/allow you to attempt a shot without the huge swing.
Shortening the swing will allow you to maintain your posture and balance throughout the swing and also allow for a more consistent distance.
Try these steps out when you're in the backyard, range, and on the course practicing. You will be amazed at how well you can hit the ball without "using your entire body" and "full swing".
4/16- Workout should be done regularly. Specific skills will be added to improve your all around game.
4/14
Hello Boys! Hope life is going well! As we move through the season, there are a couple of things to remember. Golf is a physical sport, as well as, mental. Repetition (done well) and physical training will enhance your abilities. Today focus on some putting drills:
Practice your 3-6 foot putts on a smooth surface (a smooth and fast carpet is probably best). The accuracy here isn’t important, but what is important is getting your putter on a consistent line and feeling confident that you can hit the ball straight off the face anytime you have a short putt. This is a 3-putt avoidance drill more than anything else but should give you confidence over short putts when you return to the course.
4/10 - Have a wonderful Easter weekend gentlemen! Next week we will look at some fun drills that we can do at home inside or out in the backyard if you're not able to get to the actual golf course or driving range. Be safe and as always, be awesome!

The Stance
Much like the grip, the stance is one of the most important "basics" of the golf game. If you play other sports or do other physical activities you understand how simple yet imperative it is to be consistent and improving everyday.
I will show you a few websites and videos that will show you what the stance should look like and help you deliver the different shots in the game of golf.

Notice that the stance is an "athletic position" that is similar to playing defense in basketball, getting ready to field a grounder in baseball, or getting ready for a face off in hockey. The key to the stance is to allow your body and your golf club to work effectively together harmoniously in an effective circle like motion.

Rules of golf
For those that have played the game of golf on a competitive level know that golf is one of the most unique sports in the realm of rules and who in fact is responsible for administering the rules during the course of play.
The duty is upon yourself to call and enforce penalties not only on others that are in your group, but also yourself. I will share with you a few links as well as a quiz that will assist you in the rules process and how to enforce a self governing sport.
