Legacy High School Boys’
GOLF PROGRAM
2019
Coach Justin Zainhofsky (701) 471-9725
Coach Davis Becker (701) 527-5916
Coach Steve Schultz (701) 527-2932
1. The golf program at Legacy High School allows for many golfers to try out for the team, and also allows for different skill levels to participate in golf. The program has a varsity team, a junior varsity team, and a junior varsity 2 team (if numbers warrant a 2nd team). When weather doesn’t allow for us to get on the golf course at an appropriate time, we will evaluate swings and assign a starting point for each player. There will be further evaluations done to see if the placement was appropriate or if the player should be moved from one team to another.
2. Tryouts will be held the first week of practice. Tryouts will be 27-36 holes (weather and time permitting). Coaches may make cuts earlier than 27 holes if necessary. After all players have tried out, the coaches will be looking at the scores and sending players to the appropriate teams.
-All returning state participants will be exempt to the varsity/junior varsity teams. After tryouts have been completed, coaches may reevaluate players to bring up to the varsity/junior varsity teams.
3. The highest level of the golf program is the varsity level. This level is reserved for those members who participate at the top of the program and compete for regional and state championships. Only 6 golfers are allowed to participate in these tournaments so the tryouts are quite complex.
4. The second highest level of the golf program is the junior varsity level. This level of golfer is in competition for becoming a member of the varsity team. This team will also compete in a variety of junior varsity tournaments as determined by qualifying results for each tournament.
5. The last level is the junior varsity 2 level. These golfers are assigned to play 9 holes on days where the practice facility does not allow us to accommodate the entire team. This level is developmental and allows the coaches to provide an opportunity for more athletes to participate and improve their golf skills. Exceptional players will have the opportunity to move up to the varsity or junior varsity level at the coaches’ discretion.
Practice will be everyday unless there is a tournament or unless the coaches state otherwise. You will be expected to be at the course scheduled for that day. Be ready to go at 4:00 don’t show up at 4:00.

Team members play and fill out a card for the round. Coaches will group players. If you need a specific time make special arrangements with coach prior to practice. The score will count toward an average, which affects PLAY-OFFS going to tournaments.
Playing on these days are a must, DO NOT miss these tee times.
Please do not make assumptions on practice. Unless you have talked to your coaches directly or the school directs you otherwise, there is practice.
These days will be used for team meetings, films, special topics, mental prep, pre-tournament prep, course strategy. Daily attendance is a must! If you are going to miss practice, we would like to know the day before by you and not someone else.
This will be determined by each players practice habits, attitude, tournament scores, and overall ability. Seniors will not play below the level of the sixth man and will not play in JV positions unless extenuating circumstances.

Any violation of these rules may exclude you from further tournaments.

All school rules apply; problems could result in suspension from the team to missing tournaments or course playing privileges. Any NDHSAA violations will be enforced according to BPS policy. Curfew on road trips will be enforced. Bus behavior problems could result in loss of tournament playing privileges. Bad language during practice, on trips, or in a tournament will not be tolerated!! You must maintain your academic status to be eligible to participate in school sponsored activities. School work and academics comes before golf.
If you are going to miss practice, you will need to email, text or call before practice to be excused, telling someone to tell me will be considered an unexcused absence.
You cannot miss practice for (but not limited to) the following
Work – if you want to work, unfortunately, do not play golf. The golf season is too short and needs your full attention and time outside of family and school work.
Regular medical appointments – please try to schedule them so they don’t interfere with practice
Being late 3 times is considered a missed practice .
Being dismissed from practice for insubordination is considered a missed practice.
Missed days will only damage your chances to make the team and compete in playoffs for tournaments.
For players to be considered to receive a letter they need to play in a varsity position for at least one tournament. Any violations of #7 - #9 may disqualify a player’s chance of receiving a letter along with excessive absences.
A $50 school activity fee needs to be paid to LHS due by April 17th. All golfers playing in a varsity or junior varsity position are required to establish a handicap, there is no cost for athletes ages 17 under.
You will need a sports physical every year. You must watch the “know the risks” video every year. You must be up to date on concussion impact testing.
All players on the team are encouraged to sell at least 3-5 DJGA books. This will pay for their team shirt. We receive $25 back from every coupon book sold, $10 goes to the player for team shirt, $15 goes to LHS Golf. Players can sell as many books as they can to be used for equipment, and clothing provided by the team.
All spectators need to be at least 20 yards from all golfers and in the rough. Spectators are not allowed to talk to golfers, however they may aid in looking for lost balls or give verbal encouragement. You may rent a cart if your mobility is limited and the course is allowing carts. This is subject to tournament committee. Under no circumstance are players allowed to use a cart before, after, or during a tournament round, whether they are playing or not.
