SHOTGUN:
12 Gauge is preferred; 20 Gauge depending on age/size of the shooter: The SCTT currently has 5 guns that are available to borrow during practice until your family is ready to purchase one. If the member is going to practice and compete on a regular basis, it is important that the athlete has a gun that fits them properly. This is not only a success issue, but a safety issue.
You will equally see semi-automatic as well as over/under shotguns on the competition fields. For most experienced shooters, it is simply preference of each individual. Typically, shooters start with automatic shotguns before trying the over/under versions.
Athletes will be able to borrow a team gun during their 1st year of participation.
When you plan on purchasing a gun for your son/daughter, it is strongly recommended that you purchase either a semi-automatic or an over/under shotgun. Before any purchase, please discuss the gun you are considering with one of the coaches.
AMMUNITION:
There are many options available in shotgun shells. Shells are identified by gauge, brand, shot size, and feet per second. Shot size requirements are between 9 and 7.5 shot. The gauge of ammo is determined by the shotgun you use. The brand of ammo is personal preference. Throughout the season, the team will place an ammo order at a very reasonable price. The shot size and fps effect the “kick” or recoil of the gun. 7.5 shot is typically used for trap and sporting clays, while 8 shot is used for skeet.
CHOKES:
The choke of the gun determines the spray pattern and distance of the shot. Typically, chokes are used as follows:
Choke Name: Typical Range: Typically Used:
CYL (cylinder): 5-15 yards Skeet and close up targets
SK (skeet): 15-25 yards Skeet and close up targets
IC (improved cylinder) 25-35 yards Sporting Clays and 5-Stand
LM (light modified) 35-40 yards Trap, Sporting Clays, and 5-Stand
M (modified) 40-50 yards Trap, Sporting Clays, and 5-Stand
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE):
UNIFORM:
The team fee includes the cost of the athlete’s uniform, which consists of, 2 competition shirts, a shooting vest, a hat OR visor, and a hoodie. Athletes are also required to shoot in closed-toe shoes.
MISCELLANEOUS EQUIPMENT:
There is a lot of equipment you can buy, but very little you need to buy. A shooter should have a bag to carry their equipment and extra shells in, their team shooting vest to put their shells in that they are using for their current round, and a spray can of good gun oil!
