IEP's and 504 plans will be carefully followed for students in Special ed and for those with 504 plans. We no longer have an RSP room where students can go daily for help during class time. There has never been help for Spanish in RSP anyway, so students will spend all class period in the Spanish classroom. Students who wish to request oral testing will need to do so at least two days prior to the test so that the test can be recorded and sent to the testing center. The testing center is only open during lunches this year. Students cannot leave class to go to the testing center as they did last year. These changes for the 2017-2018 school year were made by administrators. Please contact Mr. Leek, school principal, or your child's caseworker for questions or comments about these situations as teachers are not able to make any changes to the policies.
If your child has special physical needs, please communicate with the nurse. She makes decisions and needs to know about these issues so that your child will receive appropriate treatment as needed. Teachers cannot give any kind of medicine at all. The nurse cannot give any kind of medicine either without doctor's orders. Medications must be brought to school with this information and left in the nurse's office.
As a part of learning a language, all children will be required to speak aloud in Spanish from time to time, almost always in a partner situation or on a recording. It is normal for students to feel nervous and self-conscious about this, but speaking in Spanish is a basic requirement of any Spanish class. Unless your child has an IEP that states that your child is exempted from this, your child will need to present. Coming to tutorials to rehearse the speaking parts with me can greatly alleviate any nervousness your child may have. Once your child is used to the sound of his or her voice in Spanish, he or she will feel much less stressed. Every effort is made to make these situations as non-threatening and pleasant as possible.
