Students are treated as employees from the beginning of the class, creating a culture of responsibility. Students are 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students who have selected a biotechnology elective course.
The students are responsible for:
Reagent production
Product assembly
Quality control
Customer support
Logistics
In the process, the students are exposed to cutting-edge science and develop key laboratory skills. They participate in marketing their product and take pride in their work. In addition, the students are truly held accountable, as their product is actually used in other classrooms. If something doesn't work correctly, the students are notified and must take steps to correct the situation. In this way, the program functions as a real-world scenario, with real consequences. What truly sets this course apart from other programs and ROP courses is the pay-it-forward model. By producing and distributing ScienceBridge lab kits, this program not only benefits the students in the course, but also benefits thousands of other San Diego County students every year.
