Strong-field-induced molecular breakup
This theoretical study reveals the counterintuitive finding that molecules subjected to intense, extreme-ultraviolet femtosecond laser pulses can stabilize against ionization but not dissociation. The phenomenon is fully characterized by extending high-frequency Floquet theory to account for nuclear motion.
L. Yue and L. B. Madsen, Physical Review Letters 115, 033001 (2015)
This theoretical work shows that the joint kinetic energy spectra of electrons and fragmented nuclei in laser-induced dissociative ionization of molecules encode information about both sub-cycle and inter-cycle ionization dynamics.
L. Yue and L. B. Madsen, Physical Review A 93, 031401(R) (2016) (Editors’ Suggestion)
This joint experimental and theoretical study explores how the simplest heteronuclear molecule, HeH⁺, breaks apart when exposed to intense, ultrashort laser pulses. The kinetic energy of the fragments reveal different fragmentation pathways, offering new insights into how molecules behave under extreme laser conditions.

Attosecond spectroscopy of molecular structure and dynamics
This theoretical study explores the impact of nuclear motion on attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, demonstrating that, beyond ultrafast electron dynamics, vibrational and dissociation dynamics can also be effectively probed.

Laser-induced electron diffraction (LIED) is a molecular-scale electron microscopy that captures clean snapshots of a molecule’s geometry with subatomic picometer and attosecond spatiotemporal resolution. This collaborative work demonstrates that LIED can be used to identify and track the stretching and bending motion of a linear triatomic molecule in an excited state.
