Kick-Off Slides
Need some inspiration for your data visualization? Check out the activities and slides from our kick-off event. They take you through a step-by-step process for thinking about different ways to use shape, color, and size to turn your data points into an illustration.
If you are still looking for help, check out the postcards from the original Dear Data project. And read some tips from a FivethiryEight article where the project creators share some quick ideas and best practices for collecting and drawing your data!
The Basics
This is your table with the variables you've tracked:
Each variable you want to track gets a rule assigned to it:
Apply the rules you've created to your data to make a visualization:
Examples
If you need more inspiration, check out these examples made by Amber Simpson. On the left are Amber's legends, or guides to reading the visualization, while the visualization is to the right.
Notice how each variable is assigned one element : a color, shape, size or location and then combined with the other variables to represent one point of data.
