Enrollment & Registration

Enrollment Criteria

The school district will continue to utilize third party learning platforms of Edmentum (K-5th),  APEX and Montana Digital Academy or MTDA (9th-12th grade).


In order to enroll in Billings Virtual Learning students must meet one of the following two criteria:

Criteria 1 - Medical documentation that student due to health reasons (self or household)  requires a virtual learning program placement.

**Students that have been unsuccessful academically in virtual learning will not be enrolled into second semester classes until the medical provider and school official have been in communication regarding academic success**


Criteria 2 - Students wishing to be admitted into the virtual learning program but do not have a medical need can submit a request to their home school principal or administrator for approval. Student must meet the following requirements within this criteria:

A. Attendance - must have an attendance record of attending 80% or more of instructional time from preceding school year. Documented medical absences from the    preceding school year will not be counted against the attendance requirement.  

B. Grades - must have passed all course work from the preceding school year and/or semester regardless of in-building or virtual. 

C. Graduation - must be on track to graduate (High School only)


In addition to the above criteria, middle and high school students must complete the Billings Virtual Learning contract with their home school counselor or building administrator.


Students enrolled in virtual learning have limited course offerings through APEX and may choose to work within a hybrid schedule to acquire certain electives such as CTE, AP courses, or dual credit courses.  


Elementary Enrollment Process Steps

1. Student and parent/guardian schedules a time to meet with building administrator

2. Building Administrator reviews prior attendance record and grades with student and parent/guardian to determine eligibility for enrollment or medical documentation is provided by family for review.

3. If approved, student and parent/guardian sign a Billings Virtual Learning contract with building administrator.  

4.     Approved student name will be provided to the Billings Virtual Learning Student Mentor for enrollment into Edmentum.  Enrollment requests take 72 hours to complete. 

5.    Student and parent/guardian will pick up a chromebook from Lincoln Center (3rd floor)



MS/HS Enrollment Process Steps

1. Student and parent/guardian schedules a time to meet with building administrator

2. Building Administrator reviews prior attendance record, grades, and graduation progress with student and parent/guardian to determine eligibility for enrollment or medical documentation is provided for review. 

3. Student and parent/guardian will review the virtual learning platform and the sign the Billings Virtual Learning contract with building administrator.  

4.     If approved, the student and parent/guardian will visit with school counselor to choose courses.  


** Deadline for enrollment into MTDA is August 28.  No new MTDA enrollments will be approved after August 28.  Students in need of alternative education placements must work with their home school.  MTDA Calendar 24-25**



Program Availability

The District will not admit students into virtual learning when doing so would require hiring additional staff or providing educational services not currently offered.
