CENG student-researchers receive Merit Award at International Geospatial Challenge 2023

A team of three students from the College of Engineering (CENG) has received a Merit Award at the International ASEAN Geospatial Challenge 2023. Team Lakapati, composed of Jonard Buban, Kanina May De Guzman, and Karen Estola, represented the Philippines and bested other entries from the ASEAN member countries.

The team presented their research on "Image Visualization of Premature Land Conversion of Rice Lands in Matnog, Sorsogon, Philippines." The study focused on the use of geospatial technology to assess the extent of land conversion in Matnog, Sorsogon, particularly in rice lands, using data from the concerned government agencies. The team utilized remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), and other geospatial tools to analyze and visualize the changes in land use in the area.

Organized by the Singapore Land Authority with support from the ASEAN Geospatial Agencies, a total of 33 entries from the ASEAN region competed. Team Lakapati’s research caught the attention of the judges and earned them a Merit Award. This was after their national win in the same competition, where they represented the Philippines, together with the University of the Philippines Diliman’s team, HYPEBOIZ.

The university continues to encourage its students with opportunities to engage in research and innovation and participate in national and international competitions. The Merit Award received by Team Lakapati is a remarkable achievement for the university, and it serves as an inspiration for future student-researchers to pursue excellence in their respective fields.
