BU confers first Professor Emeritus to Mascariñas

In recognition of his service and accomplishments in Bicol University and having been the 8th BU president, Dr. Arnulfo M. Mascariñas was conferred the title of Professor Emeritus during the joint administrative and academic council meetings at the Bulwagang BUeño, Student Union Center, on March 8, 2023.

By virtue of BU Board of Regents (BOR) resolution number 842, series of 2023, Mascariñas is the first Professor Emeritus of the university, effective after his retirement. This title is given to retired professors who have made exceptional achievements, demonstrated outstanding service to BU, and met the qualifications set by the BU BOR. 

As Professor Emeritus, Mascariñas may continue to participate voluntarily in the following activities: publish scholarly articles, deliver specialized lectures by invitation, serve as a mentor of academic staff or be involved in staff training, supervise postgraduate students in cooperation with the employed adviser, serve on research committees and other steering committees where his expertise may be required, and serve on review and investigation committees or fulfill other advisory tasks upon request. 

Mascariñas may also use the university's work facilities and laboratories,and equipment for professional purposes. He is also a recipient of a university identification card bearing the emeritus title. He may also join the commencement exercises and other academic ceremonies, attend university social affairs and functions, and receive appropriate mailings. 

Emeritus Eligibility

To be a Professor Emeritus, one should be retired from the university as its President, Vice-President, Dean/Director or a Professor or Associate Professor-ranked faculty member. 

They should have rendered at least 20 years of active and faithful service to the university, with at least five years of service prior to retirement for Professors and Associate Professors. 

As an academician, they must show significant leadership in teaching or mentoring and public service to the university, the region, and the nation. They must also achieve distinctions as productive scholars, scientists, artists, or educators or widely acknowledged as effective and dedicated teachers, as well as researches conducted, services extended, and published works locally, regionally, nationally, and preferably internationally, according to the BU Office of the University and Board Secretary.
