BUCM celebrates 10th year

A decade after its establishment, Bicol University College of Medicine began the celebration of their 10th anniversary with the theme "Conquering Challenges and Sustaining Resilience as We Aim for Excellence," from September 30 to October 2, 2022.

Students and staff from BUCM participated in a foot parade that kicked-off the celebration and finished at the PGA-BU Sports Complex for the opening ceremonies. On the first day, four hues were seen. The colors red, yellow, and blue were used for the students to indicate the teams or year levels they are a part of, while gray was used for the BUCM personnel. Each contending team also flexed its Mr. and Miss BUCM 2022 candidates during the opening program.

To signify his support, BU President Arnulfo M. Mascariñas, along with BUCM Dean Dr. Ofelia Samar-Sy, was also present in the ceremonies. In his message, he mentioned that BUCM, like the university in general, has a long way to go.

“But I know also that good things come to those who place their trust in Divine Providence coupled with resilient hearts and capable hands ready to serve and bring hope, health, and healing where these are much needed.”

Afterward, the cheer dance competition was held, followed by the classic Palaro ng Lahi relay at the PGA-BU Sports Complex, participated by the BUCM teaching and non-teaching staff and students.

The literary competitions for debate and extemporaneous speaking continued in the afternoon. There was also a "BUCM Got Talent" dance and singing competition.

As part of the 10th year commemoration, a webinar titled "Medisina Para sa Lahat, Dapat (MAPALAD): Tricks and Tips on How to be a Doctor," was done digitally through Zoom and Facebook live. The webinar covered the challenges, opportunities, and interactions that a seasoned physician faces during their career in medicine. Additionally, the webinar launched the Adopt-a-School/Community Project for Educational Advocacy on Promoting Medical Education, Management and Information-dissemination Drive, and Prevention and Control Program of Non-Communicable and Communicable Diseases.

A BUCM Medicine Quiz Bee and Clinicopathologic Case Competition was also held virtually, through the BUCM Medicine Student Council Facebook page, and BUCM Plenary Hall respectively. The search for Mr. and Ms. BUCM took place in the Legazpi City Convention Center on the final day of the event. | by Arnold C. Noda, CPRO
