How long have you been teaching?
27 years
What do you teach?
I teach 6th-grade honors history, 7th-grade history, and history through film.
Where did you go to college?
I attended the University of Connecticut.
Have you taught anything before you were a Social Studies teacher?
Yes, 6th and 7th English and 6th and 7th- grade math.
Is being a Social Studies teacher hard?
It can be challenging to retain so much history in your head, but it's mostly fun because it's an opportunity to get kids excited about learning about the past.
What is your favorite part of being a teacher?
Students make my job fun and they bring me joy. I also have teachers at school who are my friends.
What is the hardest part of teaching?
Grading writing work, because it takes a long time. It is important, and it needs to be done, so I still like it.
When you were little what did you want to be when you grew up?
A lawyer
What is some good advice that you would give to the incoming 6th graders?
Be kind to yourself, give yourself time to adjust, ask for help when it's needed, know that the teachers are here to help and they want the best for you, and most importantly, smile.

How long have you been a principal at Beverly vista?
This year marks my first year at Beverly Vista and my 7th year in administration.
Why did you want to become a principal?
I always wanted to be a math teacher, and when I was in middle school through high school I watched my teachers do great things. After graduating, I went to college to earn my math degree and then my teaching credentials.
What is your favorite part about being a principal?
My favorite part about being a principal is being able to build a relationship with students. I am able to experience them from 6th grade all the way to 8th grade.
Is there a downside to being a principal if so what is it?
Sometimes I miss the one-on-one time with the kids in the classroom and miss seeing the light bulb go on when they get the math that I teach.

How was this year at BVMS for you?
This year has been very strange because it has been weird for everyone coming back into classes. Its been very weird for people to behave in class because they are not used to it, but this school year has been fun with all the pep rallies and the sports team.
Since you are moving to a new school next year as a principal who is the new assistant principal?
I know that the new person was chosen carefully. All of the principals were involved in the choosing of the new assistant principal.
Are you excited about the new school and what are you going to miss about BVMS?
I am very excited about my new school but I will miss the relationships I have with the kids here at BVMS.

Why did you choose to become a teacher?
I love teaching art. Art is a powerful medium. And showing this to people and making people life-long art lovers is a joy to me.
What is your favorite part about being a teacher?
Seeing the raw talent that comes from students and the creativity that they have.
Do you have any favorite students?
No, all my students are adored equally.
What do you wish some students did?
I wish that more students would understand that it’s okay to make mistakes.
What is your least favorite part about teaching?
I miss teaching elementary school students."

Student Interview: Is Homework Stressful?

Recently I interviewed my friend Gabby to
Adriana: Hey! For the first question I am going to ask you, is homework stressing you out a lot?
Gabby: Yes, but I am not getting as much homework as in elementary school
Adriana: How much time do you put into your homework?
Gabby: I put in half an hour a day
Adriana: How much homework do you think is a good amount?
Gabby: About 15 min a day
Adriana: How do you feel about going to school then once you come you have more work?
Gabby: Upset and frustrated to wake up early.
Adriana: Does homework ruin your time in having fun?
Gabby: Yes, it makes me not spend time with my family and friends
Adriana: Does homework ever help you or do you think there is no reason?
Gabby: Sometimes it helps and sometimes there is no reason.

Taking Dance Instead of P.E

Adriana: Why did you choose to take dance instead of P.E?
Shira: I chose dance because I am a dancer and I am a dancer and I have danced my whole life
Adriana: Is it a fun class or is it a thing that you have to work hard on and not have fun and be competitive?
Shira: It is a fun class but you do need to work hard to get a good grade it is not competitive at all.
Adriana: Why don’t you like P.E.
Shira: I do like P.E. I chose to do dance because it's my favorite sport
Adriana: Do you take dance lessons out of the school?
Shira: I do
Adriana: What makes you look forward to dancing?
Shira: My friends and being inspired to be as good as others are.
Adriana: Is dance something that you have to practice out of the class?
Shira: Yes, I do at a studio as well.
Adriana: Is dance a core subject like math, science, English, or social studies?
Shira: No but you do have to work hard
