The school will set you up with Christian Bergada, a relocation agent who partners with BFIS, to help you find an apartment. However, it is important to do your own research as well. Employees will share with Christian which neighborhoods they are interested in and the type of apartment they are looking for. Then, he will arrange for the viewing either in person or by video call. Here are the main websites for searching homes online in Barcelona:
Please note: August is a difficult time to find a place that is reasonably priced. Not ready to commit to an apartment right away?
Medium term (usually a share) rentals are available. Spot A Home is a website that can help you with this.
Without a stable permanent address you can't get an NIE Card and so talk to Núria before starting in an Air B and B style accommodation situation.
Each neighborhood has its own rhythm and vibe; the areas closer to school tend to be more upscale and almost exclusively residential (e.g., the area directly around the school does not have stores, restaurants, etc.)
Primero Primera: Amazing B&B in Sarria. It feels like home. It has a pool in a pretty and peaceful garden.
Eurostar Angli : A few blocks from the school (about 10-15 minute walk) and halfway up the hill. Often consultants and visitors will stay here when working with BFIS. It is a nice option. Good pool and outdoor space.

As a coastal city at the Mediterranean, Barcelona has a Mediterranean climate. In the summer months the Azores high dominates the weather. It is warm, quite hot in summer, and dry. The average summer temperatures are around 28° C/82º F. The hottest months are July and August.
In the winter, when the Azores high moves southwards, westerly winds with a little more rain prevail the Mediterranean. The city itself is protected from cold winds that often blow from the Pyrenees across Catalonia by the mountains near Barcelona. Therefore, temperatures in Barcelona rarely fall below 0 degrees in the winter. The winter daytime temperatures are about 13° C/56° F on the average.
Prepare for heat in the summer and cold in the winter.
Inbound: BFIS will reimburse Foreign-Hired Faculty Members up to 350€ for the shipping of excess baggage from his/her home of record to Barcelona. Payment will be made in the first pay-check.

Please note: If the Foreign-Hired Lead Teacher fails to meet the terms of his/her initial contractual obligation and leaves BFIS prior to completing at least two years of service the school reserves the right to ask for reimbursement of arrival allowance.

Parcels that are marked as “gifts” with a value under 45€ are exempt from custom fees
When indicating the value of the package always make it lower that it really is, within a reasonable range
If a package is insured, it is assumed valuable and will most likely be taxed and held at customs
Keep the descriptions of the items in the package as vague as possible. Use “toiletries” rather than “makeup” or words like “gift”, “used” and “old personal belongings”
Remove all price tags and plastic packaging before sending new items, just in case customs does open your package
Use UPS for express shipments, not FedEx, because UPS operates within Spain whereas FedEx hands off packages to local couriers
Do not send vitamins; they always seem to be stopped and taxed
Mailing several smaller boxes costs more than one big box (read: one heavy box)
Comments from other Staff Members
Shipping from the US can be unpredictable. Most employees that are from the States recommend to bring extra baggage with you on the flight as opposed to shipping personal or work belongings.
"You will need to provide a number of documents to clear customs; in addition to the standard list, as an EU citizen, I had to show my work contract as proof that I planned to reside in Spain."
"Get insurance! We shipped from China and it took about 5-6 months and most of boxes were damaged by water and mold when they arrived. I would not have shipped had I known the process would be so difficult. "
"Shipping can be quite difficult and if the boxes get tagged in customs quite expensive. From my experience, I would not ship again rather just check as many suitcases as possible on my flight to BCN."
BFIS will provide each newly hired Foreign-Hired Lead Teachers an arrival allowance of €6.000 gross. The entire amount is paid into your first pay check but remember it is taxed as a benefit.
Please note: If the Foreign-Hired Lead Teacher fails to meet the terms of his/her initial contractual obligation and leaves BFIS prior to completing at least two years of service, the school reserves the right to ask for reimbursement of arrival allowance.
