Practice Pink Spelling Notebook- Goes Home this Week
This week we start a very important part of our 1st grade learning with the spelling notebook! Now because these spelling notebooks are so important to us we start with a practice spelling notebook so students can learn the proper way to treat and fill out their spelling notebook.
An important part of spelling notebook is that they are taken home everyday for students to practice both reading and spelling for homework. They also must be brought back everyday. They MUST NOT be altered at home (crossing words out, underlining, highlighting, checkmarks, etc.) as all corrections will be done in class and in class only. All first grade notebooks must look exactly the same and all teachers check every single one before they go home for the day.
Spelling Homework Example:
Please take great care of these notebooks as they only receive one for the year. Please use great caution around food, drinks, animals and other siblings. Once we have the official pink notebooks, if damaged, a new notebook will need to be purchased by you to replace the damaged one. Your child will also have to rewrite all words for the entire notebook thus far. This will need to be completed in class and at recess time as all notebooks can only be altered in class.
It is of absolute importance that these spelling notebooks are returned to class EVERYDAY. These notebooks are one of the most important tools that we use in first grade and without them we would not be able to make as much progress as we do throughout the year!
Reading Grade-
Reading grades are based on an O (Outstanding), S (Satisfactory), or N (Needs Improvement) grading scale. All words students will be expected to read have been practiced, broken down and sounded by your student prior to being tested. Reading will start out simple with sight words and build to be more complex using words that we will have practiced within our literacy books for the week. Students will receive 1 point for reading the word correctly, 1/2 point if they need to sound it out and no points for the word if they need assistance. If you would like to know which words to practice with your student, please visit the HW/Tests tab on the website.
Penmanship-
Penmanship is very important to us here at BFCS. Good handwriting is how students connect their letters to their sounds.
We grade penmanship on an O, S, N scale.
O-Outstanding, S-Satisfactory, N- Needs Improvement
In order to determine what grade your child receives we look at the Spalding outlines for good handwriting (which we call handwriting focuses). These focuses include:
-All letters sitting on the baseline
-Short letters starting at the midpoint
-Tall letters starting just below the top line
-Clock letters being round not oval
-Letter size and formation being consistent
-Down lines being straight and parallel
-Clock letters starting at 2 on the clock
-Dots and crossbars at the midpoint (i, f, t, etc.)
Please look at the examples below of what we would grade as O, S, or N.
