Used batteries can be taken to Hieber or Penny. Consider collecting them in a container in your house, and then bringing them all to the store when it fills up.
❌Batteries can NOT be put in Restmüll.
At Kandern's Heiber, you will see this metal box to the right. It is right across from the Bakery. At Penny, it is on the left, before you exit.
Hieber
Penny
Returning plastic/glass bottles to Penny or Hieber: any bottle with the "Pfand" symbol (right) can be returned to the store for 15-25 cents credit. Simply insert your bottles into the Pfand machine at the entrance to the store, and it will print for you a "Bon" ticket for credit you can use towards any purchase in the store.
The Pfand machine is sometimes called a "reverse vending machine."
At Hieber, bottles in a crate (called a "Kasten") can be placed on the runway at the bottom of the Pfand machine. The crate does not have to be full in order to deposit them.
Mehrweg bottle
Do you leave the cap on when you return the bottle?
Yes! Pfand bottles that are labeled "Mehrweg" are "reusable" and "refillable" should have the cap on.
Pfand bottles that are "Einweg" can be returned to the Pfand machine and will be shredded and recycled. You can keep the cap on, but you can also throw the cap away in the gelbe sack.
"Pfand" literally means "deposit," and is Germany's way of recycling bottles. 90% of Pfand bottles are returned to the system. The average plastic bottle will be reused 20 times, and the average glass bottle will be refilled 50 times before being broken or unreturned. (source) 💡Eco-tip: use glass bottles for juice, sparkling water, etc. whenever possible!
The Red Cross has a clothing donation box next to the Feurwehr. You can donate clothing, textiles, blankets, towels, shoes, and plush toys. The clothing does not always have to be in good shape. Only about 7% of clothing will actually go to people in need (source). The rest is often shredded and used to make other things, such as washcloths or car seat stuffing. Because of this, you can donate ripped clothing that won't be worn again.
Additionally, you can try selling your clothes on the Kandern Facebook Flohmarkt.
Kandern: these are picked up in Kandern. Check this calendar to see when yours can be picked up. You will need to buy a special pick-up tag for your tree. These can be purchased from the post office or from Schneiders
In Riedlingen and other villages, they are not picked up. You can drive your Christmas tree to this location to dispose of it.
