The Gelbe Sacks (Yellow Bags) are free, and you can pick them up at the Rathaus. They are used for metal and plastic packaging. They are picked up monthly.
If it's plastic / metallic, and was used to package food, it goes into the Gelbe Sack! Below is a list, with surprising or noteworthy items in bold.
Aerosol spray cans (empty)

💡Eco-tip: Consider bamboo toothbrushes as a more eco-friendly alternative.
No! Do not waste water deep cleaning Gelbe sack trash!
Products should be “Löffelrein” = spoon clean (you have taken a spoon and scooped out as much as possible), but not perfectly clean. 💡Eco-tip: Avoid wasting water by swishing out yogurt cups / other plastic containers in the sink dishwater after you are done washing dishes.
The plastic is shredded and then washed, and so materials stuck in bottles will be cleaned from the shredded plastic.
Note: Depending on which case is being used in German, you will sometimes see the yellow bag as "gelbe, gelber, or gelben." It is "der gelbe Sack", but you have "eine gelbe Sack," but you put something in "den gelben Sack." For the sake of simplicity, and since we are speaking English anyway, this website uses "gelbe sack."
