NOVEL IDEA: PLANES FOR PHYSICS
ENGAGE: Students are given paper to make paper airplanes. Their goal is to see who can make their paper airplane fly the farthest.
EXPLORE: Classroom discussion is held and facilitated by the teacher. Students share what worked or did not work well in their development.
EXPLAIN: Students research different variables of their choosing such as wing span, weight distribution, length of plane etc. Students must explain how their chosen variable affects flight distance.
ELABORATE: Students are challenged to reconstruct their planes with their newly learned information. Students will then test their flight distance again to see if implementation of new structural changes helped increase flight distance.
EVALUATE: Students present their knowledge and data that they collected from both of their flight trials. Students must identify specific structural features of their plane that increased or decreased their flight distance and explain the physics in their reasoning.
Other Resources
NGSS Phenomena: This resource lets you search the phenomena library by topic or disciplinary core idea. The phenomena are either short video clips or pictures that arise thought in students. This would be a great resource for the engage phase (NGSS Phenomena, n.d.).
The Wonder of Science: Search by age level and discipline area for middle and high school levels and more specifically standard. This resource provides paragraph introductions to video clips to engage students about a certain topic (The Wonder of Science, n.d.).
Criteria for Evaluation Phenomena: Not sure if the phenomena is approriate for what you need for engaging your students? This resource by the National Science Teachers Association provides a checklist for criteria to look for when determining if a particular phenomena is right for your learners' needs (National Science Teaching Association, n.d.b).
EdTopia: You want to implement the 5E model into one of your lessons but do not know where to start? This article gives a simplistic overview about how to start the implementation of the 5E model in your classroom (Gerges, 2022).
National Science Teaching Association: This resource offers searchable 5E resources via grade level. Resources include journal articles, which some have sample lesson plans, as well as blog posts that offer different perspectives on various aspects of the 5E model (National Science Teaching Association, n.d.a).
