NOVEL IDEA: PLANS TO REAL LIFE
ENGAGE: Show students design plans of an actual building, bridge, highway etc. Next, show students actual buildings, bridges or highways. Students must dicuss and determine which design plans fit with the actual buildings.
EXPLORE: Once curious, students then explore through their own research about engineer planning to determine if their claims about their matches are correct.
EXPLAIN: Students must provide evidence to explain why their matches are correct.
ELABORATE: Students are given a separate set of plans, buildings, bridges and highways to match.
EVALAUATION: Student learning is determined by the amount of correct matches with the new set.
OTHER RESOURCES
Engineering and the 5E Model: This blog post discusses how to implement engineering into a lesson based on the 5E model. Descriptions and tips as to how to do it are first described follwed by a sample lesson intergrating an engineering aspect (Bogden & Wilkerson, 2023).
NASA Design Challenge: Every year NASA puts on a design challenge. This past year students were tasked with designing a lunar plant growth chamber. The lessons are differentiated for different grade levels. Elementary, middle and high school students design, build and evaluate around a topic while engaging in research-based learning. Students learn the engineering design process and how to conduct a scientific experiment. This would be a great opportunity for an engineering class to collaborate with a science class to apply the 5E model (NASA, n.d.).
Bringing STEM Experts into Classroom: This article describes the benefits of bringing STEM experts into the classroon. There are many varied engineering careers. Use this resource to inspire you to invite engineers into your classroom to share how they implement the 5E learning model into their daily jobs (Langero, 2022).
Engaging Easy Engineering Lesson Plans: This resource allows you to search lessons based on a specific engineering field and age level. These lesson plans could serve as your base from which you tweak and apply to the 5E learning model (TryEngineering, 2023).
University of New Mexico Engineering Activities: This website offers an abundant amount of engineering activities. These activities could serve as an inspiration and a foundation for which an engineering teacher could build a lesson using the 5E model of instruction (University of New Mexico, n.d.).
